The Future of Air Travel Seat and Bed Combo

VnExpressVnExpress13/04/2024

The Zephyr seat-bed concept allows passengers to experience sitting or lying in a variety of positions on long-haul flights at a cheaper price than business class tickets.

Being able to lie down on a plane has always been a dream for the majority of people, but until now it has only been available to business class passengers. However, the design of a seat and bed combo by San Francisco-based startup Zephyr Aerospace, USA, allows premium economy passengers to lie down on a plane.

Under this design, two passengers would sit in a row, separated by the upper and lower decks. Seating would need to be arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration, allowing airlines to maintain seating capacity without sacrificing passenger comfort.

The idea, inspired by Zephyr CEO Jeffrey O'Neill during a 19-hour non-stop flight from New York to Singapore a few years ago, could revolutionise the in-flight experience. O'Neill claims the new design will be "the cheapest way to sleep on long-haul flights".

The Zephyr seat and bed combo also offers economy passengers the privacy of business class. The sleeper seat has fixed parts that limit movement and is made of the highest standard of lightweight composite materials, reducing direct maintenance costs for airlines. A telescopic ladder allows passengers to quickly climb to the upper deck and can be removed. Drop-down footrests increase personal space in each seat, allowing passengers to have more lying positions. The sleeper seat space is large enough for children and adults to lie side by side.

Zephyr was founded in 2018. In 2021, the company filed a provisional patent for a full-scale prototype and began soliciting feedback from customers and airlines. In 2022, Zephyr began work on improving the product structure by integrating the frame and chassis concept. In 2024, Zephyr's seat and bed concept was nominated for a Crystal Cabin Award, the most prestigious award for aircraft cabin innovation and setting the standard for the future of travel.

The Zephyr seat is aimed at commercial airlines and direct sales to the private jet market. It is also licensed to seat manufacturers and airlines. Priced at $30,000 to $40,000, the seat is said to reduce the average cost of a business-class seat by up to 60 percent, while reducing aircraft weight by more than 80 percent thanks to advanced composite materials and motion-restricting components. The Zephyr seat can also be used in air, rail, bus, and military transportation.

Zephyr is currently in the process of designing a full-scale, high-quality model to be shown at conferences and shown to the public. The company is also in talks with commercial airlines, seat manufacturers, and OEMs like Airbus and Boeing.
