The 'telling' numbers about health after quitting smoking

(PLVN) - Many studies have shown a link between quitting smoking and improved health indicators. After quitting smoking, the risk of cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and cancer is significantly reduced over time. These figures clearly reflect the positive impact of quitting smoking on the body.

According to statistics, tobacco use is related to 25 diseases: stroke, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer... are the leading causes of death in Vietnam. It is estimated that each year there are about 104,300 deaths due to tobacco-related diseases, of which smoking causes 85,500 deaths and passive smoking causes 18,800 deaths.

When most smokers first quit, they feel it takes a long time for them to notice improvements in their health and well-being. In fact, the health benefits begin at least an hour after their last cigarette and continue to improve over time.

After 1 hour : As little as 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your heart rate will slow down and return to normal. Blood pressure will begin to drop and circulation may begin to improve.

After 12 hours : Cigarettes contain many toxic substances, most notably Carbon monoxide, a gas in cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide is toxic and even fatal in high doses, and also prevents oxygen from entering the lungs and blood. When large doses of Carbon monoxide are inhaled in a short period of time, suffocation due to lack of oxygen can occur. After just 12 hours of not smoking, the body will naturally cleanse itself of excess Carbon monoxide from cigarettes. Carbon monoxide levels return to normal, increasing the body's Oxygen levels.

After 1 day: Just 1 day after quitting smoking, your risk of heart attack begins to decrease. Smoking increases your risk of developing coronary heart disease by lowering good cholesterol, making heart-healthy exercise more difficult. Smoking also raises blood pressure and increases blood clotting, increasing your risk of stroke.

After 2 days : Smoking damages the nerve endings responsible for the senses of smell and taste. In as little as 2 days after quitting, a person may notice a heightened sense of smell and a more vivid sense of taste as these nerves heal.

After 3 days : 3 days after quitting smoking, the nicotine levels in a person's body will be depleted. Although it is healthier to not have nicotine in the body, this initial decline can cause nicotine withdrawal syndrome. About 3 days after quitting, most people will feel moody and irritable, have severe headaches, and crave cigarettes as the body adjusts.

After 1 month : Within 1 month, a person's lung function begins to improve. As the lungs heal and lung capacity improves, former smokers may notice less coughing and shortness of breath. Athletic endurance increases, and former smokers may notice a new ability for cardiovascular activities, such as running and jumping.

After 1-3 months : During the next few months after quitting, circulation continues to improve.

After 9 months : Nine months after quitting smoking, your lungs have healed significantly. The delicate, hair-like structures inside your lungs called cilia have recovered from the damage caused to them by cigarette smoke. These structures help push mucus out of your lungs and help fight infection.

Around this time, many former smokers notice a decrease in the frequency of lung infections because the healed cilia can do their job more easily.

After 1 year : One year after quitting smoking, a person's risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half. This risk continues to decrease past the 1-year mark.

After 5 years : Cigarettes contain many toxins that are known to narrow arteries and blood vessels. These same toxins also increase the likelihood of blood clots forming. After 5 years of not smoking, the body has healed enough for the arteries and blood vessels to begin to widen again. This widening means that blood is less likely to clot, reducing the risk of stroke. The risk of stroke will continue to decrease over the next 10 years as the body heals.

After 10 years : After 10 years, a person's chance of developing lung cancer and dying from lung cancer is almost half that of a person who continues to smoke. The chance of developing cancer of the mouth, throat, or pancreas is significantly reduced.

After 15 years : After 15 years of quitting smoking, the risk of coronary heart disease is similar to that of a non-smoker. Similarly, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer has dropped to the same level as a non-smoker.

After 20 years: After 20 years, the risk of death from smoking-related causes, including lung disease and cancer, drops to that of a person who has never smoked in their life. Additionally, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer has dropped to that of people who have never smoked.

There are also many other benefits to quitting smoking, such as: Quitting smoking reduces your risk of diabetes, allows your blood vessels to function better, and helps your heart and lungs. Smokers live at least 10 years less than non-smokers. Quitting smoking before age 40 reduces the risk of dying from a smoking-related disease by about 90%.

In addition, people who quit smoking will find that food tastes better; their sense of smell returns to normal; their breath, hair and clothes no longer smell of cigarettes; their teeth and nails stop turning yellow; they have less difficulty breathing when doing normal activities such as climbing stairs or doing light housework...
