FIFA has also decided to choose the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico, as the venue for the opening match of the 2026 World Cup on June 11th.
Accordingly, Estadio Azteca will become the first stadium in history to host the opening matches of three World Cups, following the 1970 World Cup - which saw the rise of "King of Football" Pele; and the 1986 World Cup - when football legend Diego Armando Maradona led the Argentine national team to victory in the final against Germany.
Three American nations – Canada, Mexico, and the United States – will co-host the 2026 World Cup. The upcoming global football event will be the first tournament to feature 48 teams instead of the usual 32, with a total of 104 matches taking place in 16 stadiums across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
