The meeting took place at the company's headquarters in Menlo Park (USA) and was connected to other offices worldwide.
According to Reuters , at this meeting, Meta executives revealed an upcoming Instagram feature. This includes the ability for users to edit photos via a text prompt and another feature that allows them to create emoji stickers for messaging services.
This announcement comes amidst significant financial difficulties that Meta has faced recently, forcing it to lay off tens of thousands of workers. The transformation from Facebook to Meta has also plunged the company into crisis, particularly its ambition to shift its operations from a social network to a metaverse—a virtual universe of metadata.
While Meta is still struggling and spending $10 billion annually on developing the metaverse, competitors like Google, Microsoft, and Snapchat have announced the launch of a range of AI tools in their products, leaving Meta feeling uneasy.
Meta has yet to release any general AI products aimed at consumers, although last month the company announced it was working with a small group of advertisers to test AI-powered tools for creating backgrounds and text variations for their advertising campaigns.
Meta reorganized its AI divisions and invested heavily in infrastructure, having identified early last year that it lacked the hardware and software capabilities to support its AI product needs.
During the meeting, founder Zuckerberg stated that advances in general AI last year have now helped the company build and apply the technology "to each of our products."
In addition to consumer-facing tools, at the meeting, executives announced a virtual assistant for employees called Metamate. This tool can answer questions and perform tasks based on information gathered from the company's internal systems.
Many of Meta's AI tools will be built on open-source code, allowing users to build their own AI chatbots. Meta has been criticized by many other tech companies, competitors, and critics for its use of open-source code, which they argue allows for the spread of misinformation and hate speech on a larger scale.
According to the New York Times , at the meeting, aimed at addressing concerns about Meta's open-source access, the Facebook founder stated that "democratizing access to this data is of great value" and expressed hope that, in the future, users could build their own AI programs without relying on pre-existing frameworks from a few large tech companies.
Despite its recent focus on AI, Zuckerberg stated that the company will not abandon its plans for the metaverse. "We've been focused on both AI and the metaverse for many years now, and we're going to continue focusing on that."
