Thanks to a series of AI tools, students can create posters, maps or videos for history and geography lessons in just a few minutes, turning traditionally difficult content into an intuitive and engaging experience.

On November 25, at Tan Phu Primary - Secondary - High School (Tan Phu ward), the topic "Application of some artificial intelligence (AI) tools in teaching history and geography 11 to promote self-study capacity for students" attracted the participation of many high school teachers who are subject group leaders.

This is the first time a city-level topic on AI application in teaching history and geography has been oriented by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training for teachers of these subjects in high school.

Geography teachers at Nguyen Thuong Hien High School said that the characteristics of history and geography subjects are that knowledge appears in the form of text, diagrams, maps, videos , statistics, research articles or digital resources on the Internet.

"Thanks to AI, students not only find the right source of materials but are also excited to explore and discover lessons in their own way," this teacher shared.

The AI ​​ecosystem used by teachers includes ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude... to write summaries of historical events, create mind maps for geography lessons, design multiple choice questions, illustrate images or ask AI to summarize, analyze, and explain historical events from many perspectives.

Teachers said they use Google Earth and Infographic AI tools to create maps, guide students in map reading, and analyze climate, terrain, etc. in geography.

Directly practicing AI application lessons, students of Tan Phu Primary - Secondary - High School had an exciting experience.

"I use AI to create posters, maps, and videos of presentations. I like using AI most to summarize and systematize historical documents," said student Nguyen Quang Huy (grade 11).

Huy cites a history article, where you simply enter into ChatGPT the requirements such as listing important places, key terms, and a brief explanation of the context and meaning. Immediately after, all the information is converted into mind maps, summary tables, timelines or comparison tables - visual forms that Huy says are "very memorable and very enjoyable".

Using AI as a suggestion tool

Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Le Thanh Long - a geography specialist (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training) - said that the characteristics of the two subjects of history and geography are that students are not interested, but through this topic, teachers are guided on how to design more lively activities, create learning products and summarize lessons to encourage students to self-study more effectively.

"It is important that during the teaching process, students should not use AI as a ready-made answer, but rather use it as a suggestive tool to summarize documents, create mind maps, create exploratory questions, visualize data...

AI is not to do the homework for you, but to suggest and expand the approach. Therefore, teachers must remind students to check textbooks and reference materials for accuracy," Mr. Long emphasized.
