Every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the lantern street on Luong Nhu Hoc Street (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) displays all kinds of lanterns. Therefore, it attracts young people and many families who come to have fun, visit, and take pictures.
To meet the needs of the people, dozens of households around the lantern street have opened makeshift parking lots. However, many of these parking attendants set up stalls in the middle of the road to solicit customers and overcharge for motorbike parking, sometimes as much as 30,000 - 40,000 VND per vehicle, causing resentment among many people.

Young people are looking for parking spaces to visit and have fun in the lantern street on Luong Nhu Hoc Street.
On the evening of October 4th, thousands of people flocked to Luong Nhu Hoc Street for entertainment, causing severe traffic congestion. Nearly a hundred makeshift parking lots sprung up along Luong Nhu Hoc, Tran Hung Dao, Nguyen Trai, Lao Tu, Hong Bang streets, and other routes.
Most of these parking lots are privately owned by residents in the area to serve the needs of the local community. These parking lots utilize space ranging from indoor areas to entire sidewalks and roads, encroaching on pedestrian walkways.
To attract customers, many parking lot owners blast loud loudspeakers to entice them to park. A more common tactic is for these makeshift parking lots to send people out into the middle of the road to solicit customers. Along each stretch of road surrounding the lantern street, dozens of people line up to wave at potential parking spots. They wave at any motorbike passing by, even blocking the road and pulling it in, creating traffic hazards.

Employees of an unauthorized parking lot set up in the middle of Luong Nhu Hoc street to solicit customers to park their vehicles.
Pulling into a parking lot near the intersection of Luong Nhu Hoc Street, we were immediately pulled aside by a woman who quoted a price of 30,000 VND per motorbike and 40,000 VND per scooter. When we complained about the high price, the parking lot owner loudly retorted, "Today is Mid-Autumn Festival, so it has to be more expensive than usual. If you want something cheaper, go somewhere else."
Mr. Nguyen Tuan Linh (58 years old, residing in District 11) shared: "Every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival, I always take my family to visit the lantern street. Just last year and the year before, parking fees were usually at their highest, around 15,000 to 20,000 VND. This year, many places are overcharging, up to 30,000 to 50,000 VND."
Along Tran Hung Dao street, from the intersection with Trieu Quang Phuc to Chau Van Liem, and then onto Nguyen Trai, there are about 30 other parking spots. Here, we observed prices ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 VND depending on the distance from the lantern street.
One employee shared that the Mid-Autumn Festival is the only time of year when business is good, so they're taking advantage of the opportunity to make money.

An unauthorized parking lot occupies the entire sidewalk and road at the Ky Hoa - Luong Nhu Hoc intersection.

Many people run into the middle of the road to solicit customers for parking, causing traffic safety hazards.

They're soliciting customers to park their cars right at the intersection of Hong Bang and Luong Nhu Hoc streets.

Sidewalks, roads, schools, apartment building basements... are all being used extensively as parking spaces, leading to both traffic safety hazards and a lack of public order and security.
