Huge income

In 2022, Khabane "Khaby" Lame became a social media personality with 149.5 million followers at the age of 22. By 2023, his following had reached 157.8 million. In an exclusive interview with Fortune, Lame revealed that in addition to the millions of likes he gets on each video , he also makes a "huge" amount of money.

One of the video clips that attracts viewers was made by the owner of the "million likes" account (Video: Tiktok Stars).

In fact, Lame can earn up to $750,000 per video clip, which could earn him $10 million by 2022. The bulk of Lame’s income comes from brand deals in the form of online content, with an estimated average of $400,000 per branded clip.

Lame's clips are mostly silent but captivate viewers with humor, conveyed through body language and online news snippets.

"I describe myself as a simple person, but full of ideas and inspiration. Making people laugh has always been my biggest passion in life," the young man confided.

Typically, in a recent clip with more than 11 million views, Lame made viewers laugh by exposing a magic trick with a deck of cards that someone else posted on social media.

Additionally, Lame also frequently posts content about trolling other content creators or staging his own skits.

Lame told Forbes that although the clips look simple, he had to think a lot before starting.

"Every day, I spend at least 3 hours looking for suitable videos to imitate. I always try to be careful not to offend anyone with my videos and I always like to joke around with light parodies," Lame confided.

In fact, the young man from an African country who did not speak English at all tried to practice every day with a tutor. His inability to speak English did not stop the migrant worker from achieving success on the Internet.

His popularity as a Tiktoker (content creator on Tiktok) has made him a star, helping him meet celebrities. Hugo Boss paid him $450,000 just to see him walk in a Milan fashion week show.

Not only that, Lame was also paid $750,000 by a major Hollywood film studio for just one Tiktok clip.

One step to change your life

Looking at the young man's current luxurious life, many people are surprised to learn about Lame's miserable past.

Lame grew up with three siblings after his parents emigrated from Dakar, Senegal (a country in West Africa) in 2001 to the Turin suburb of Chivasso (Italy). After graduating from high school, he worked as a factory worker until the pandemic left him unemployed.

"During the pandemic, I felt bored because I had a lot of free time, so I started making videos on Tiktok," Lame said.

Starting as a hobby, Lame posted his clips on social networks. Quickly, after just a few days, he had millions of followers. Gradually, with more and more followers, Lame earned a "huge" amount of money thanks to advertising contracts.

It is known that he was also honored in the Forbes Under 30 list (outstanding faces under 30 years old), invited to be a member of the jury of the #TikTokShortFilm category of the Cannes Film Festival in 2022; attended the Oscars award ceremony; invited to be a judge on the Italy's Got Talent program.

Not only Lame, many people have changed their lives every day thanks to online applications.

Lance Stewart was one of the first content creators to start his career on the online app Vine. Speaking to The Post, Lance said he had never grown on a platform as quickly as TikTok.

At that point, he had 13.2 million followers after using the app for just 8 or 9 months. That's on par with years of channel building on other apps. Now, 2 years later, he's amassed 22.4 million followers.

According to statistics, Tiktok reached 1 billion users/month in 2021. This number is still increasing from 2022. Tiktok has also surpassed other major platforms such as Twitter, Pinterest and Snapchat, while still behind Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
