Cong Phuong made his second appearance for Yokohama FC this season when his team faced Nagoya in the J League Cup. The Vietnamese striker came on as a substitute but was quickly substituted off.

This was a match where coach Yomada Shuhei gave opportunities to players who rarely get playing time in the J2 League. Nguyen Cong Phuong was registered to play for Yokohama, starting from the bench.

Facing Nagoya Grampus – a team currently competing in the J.League – Yokohama conceded two early goals in the 5th and 7th minutes. The deadlock in attack caused coach Shuhei to lose patience and make a substitution in the first half.

However, Cong Phuong's time on the field only lasted 15 minutes. In the 57th minute, coach Yomada unexpectedly substituted the Vietnamese player with Takuya Wada, a defensive midfielder. During his time on the field, Cong Phuong played well, although he made a few mistakes in ball handling.

Substituting Cong Phuong with a defensive player did not help Yokohama improve their defensive organization. The home team conceded another goal in the 63rd minute and lost 1-3, being eliminated from the tournament.

This is the second time this season that Cong Phuong has played for Yokohama FC. Previously, the player from Nghe An started in the victory against Fagiano Okayama on April 24th, also in the J.League Cup.

In the J2 League, Cong Phuong has never been included in the matchday squad. Having been eliminated from the National Cup, the Vietnamese national team player's chances of playing are increasingly limited. This is Cong Phuong's second season at Yokohama, but the former Hoang Anh Gia Lai player has yet to find a place in Coach Yomada's lineup.

Cong Phuong's contract with the club extends until the end of the 2026 season. After that, it is highly likely that Cong Phuong will return to play in the V.League or seek a more suitable overseas club.
