Gibraltar’s 2026 World Cup qualifying woes continued as they suffered a heavy defeat in the Algarve. The 196th - ranked side registered their third consecutive defeat and extended their winless streak in major tournament qualifying.

Despite being registered as the home team, Gibraltar were playing on neutral ground and in a near-empty stadium, the difference in class between the two teams was quickly evident. Petar Sucic fired a warning shot in the third minute, signaling a difficult night for the Gibraltar defence. Ivan Perisic was the focal point of every Croatian attack, constantly delivering sharp passes and forcing the Gibraltar defence to work at full capacity.

Croatia showed strength against weak opponent.

Despite some resistance, notably a missed chance from Jaiden Bartolo in the first half, Gibraltar were unable to avoid being broken. Mario Pasalic opened the scoring after 28 minutes after a fine assist from Perisic, before Ante Budimir made it 2-0 just two minutes later. By the end of the first half, Croatia had 18 shots compared to just one from the home side, demonstrating their complete dominance.

The game was no different in the second half. Luca Sucic missed a great chance early in the half, but then Louie Annesley's mistake allowed the ball to find Franjo Ivanovic for the third. In a half where Perisic continued to haunt his opponents, he created two more goals, before a stunning volley made it 5-0.

In the 64th minute, Luka Modric came off the bench early to leave his mark with the pass that opened up the sixth goal for Andrej Kramaric. Kramaric did not stop there, taking advantage of the crumbling Gibraltar defense to seal a 7-0 victory for Croatia in the 79th minute.

The result leaves Gibraltar bottom of Group L with no points and a goal difference of -13 after three games. It is also their 23rd consecutive defeat in World Cup qualifying. Meanwhile, Croatia have won their first qualifiers and moved up to mid-table, just three points behind Montenegro despite having played two games less.
