Crystal Palace received bad news after winning the FA Community Shield.

Just one day after winning the FA Community Shield by defeating Liverpool, Crystal Palace received bad news when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected their appeal, officially relegating the team to the Conference League instead of the Europa League.

Last month, UEFA's Club Financial Control Committee (CFCB) ruled that Crystal Palace's close ties to Lyon had violated the rules regarding multi-club ownership.

Accordingly, American businessman John Textor, through Eagle Football Holdings Limited, gained control of Lyon and owned 43.9% of Crystal Palace's shares. Although the Premier League club insisted that Textor did not interfere with the club's operations, UEFA prohibits any individual or organization from holding more than 30% of the shares in more than one club participating in the same European competition.

Crystal Palace appealed to the CAS with three main arguments: the CFCB's decision was unfair, and Lyon and Nottingham Forest did not deserve to be promoted. However, all three arguments were rejected.

With this ruling, Nottingham Forest became the direct beneficiary, being promoted from the Conference League to the Europa League. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will have to play in the Conference League play-off round at the end of the month, facing the loser of the Fredrikstad - FC Midtjylland match.

Chairman and co-owner Steve Parish expressed disappointment but affirmed that they would consider further steps. "If we don't achieve the desired results, we will look at other options," he said.

The crux of the matter lies in UEFA's tightening of the MCO regulations, requiring clubs to comply by March 1st, instead of June 3rd as before. Although John Textor sold his stake in Crystal Palace last month, UEFA is still assessing his ownership status as of March 1st, when he still had influence over both teams.

The CAS ruling also affirmed that UEFA's regulations are clear and without exception. Crystal Palace's situation is similar to that of Drogheda United (Ireland), who were also disqualified from the Conference League due to a conflict of ownership and failed in their appeal to CAS, setting an unfavorable precedent for the English team. This shows that football's governing bodies are increasingly tightening regulations on multi-club ownership.
