According to relatives, she had a small birthmark on her nose since childhood, which was painless and hardly affected her daily life. The incident occurred more than two years ago when, while holding her grandchild, she was accidentally scratched by the child's hand. Blood gushed from the birthmark uncontrollably and continuously. From that moment, the birthmark began to abnormally swell rapidly into a dark purple tumor with necrotic surface, constantly oozing blood and pus, almost completely covering one side of her nose, causing her difficulty breathing, eating, and daily pain.
Due to her difficult family circumstances, she could only silently endure her suffering for a long time. Then, when her niece learned that Dr. Tú Dung, the CEO of JW Hospital, regularly provided free surgeries for those in need, they decided to bring her to JW in the hope of finding a last chance for treatment.
Risk of malignant cancer
Upon arriving at JW Hospital, she was urgently examined by the medical team. The tumor was a dark purple mass that had spread throughout the tip of her nose, with necrotic tissue and continuous oozing. Even a slight touch could cause the tumor to rupture and bleed profusely.
Noticing several abnormal signs, Dr. Tu Dung immediately ordered a vascular ultrasound, an MRI of the tumor, and a full range of tests for a comprehensive assessment.
"The images show that the tumor takes up contrast, indicating it is a rapidly proliferating lesion. The most worrying aspect is that the tumor is supplied by two branches of the facial artery, so even a small mistake during the intervention could cause massive bleeding," Dr. Tu Dung shared.
Doctors also assessed that in her case, any delay could cause the tumor to spread, penetrate deep into the cartilage tissue, and cause complications that would be very difficult to control.

After nearly two hours of surgery, the medical team successfully removed the entire necrotic, dark purple tumor.

The surgery concluded after 2 hours: the necrotic tumor was completely removed.
After nearly two hours of surgery, Dr. Tu Dung and her team completely removed the necrotic, dark purple tumor, freeing the damaged area and reconstructing the nasal tip structure for the patient.
Her face, disfigured by the tumor, has now been restored to a new one, ending her long days of being haunted by the tumor.
Immediately after removal, the entire tumor was properly preserved and sent for biopsy to determine its malignancy level and assess the possibility of metastasis or invasion of adjacent tissue. This is a necessary step in developing a follow-up and care plan for the patient, ensuring long-term safety after the life-saving surgery.
