At around 5:30 a.m. on May 5, while driving a canoe from the fishing ground back to the island, fisherman Ngo Van Minh, residing in Tay village, An Vinh (Ly Son) discovered a strange animal struggling under the water, about 1 nautical mile from the island. When approaching, Mr. Minh identified it as a sea turtle trapped in a net. He immediately pulled the turtle onto the canoe and removed the net wrapped around its body.
However, after the rescue, Mr. Minh discovered that the sea turtle had signs of serious damage to its two front limbs. Mr. Minh contacted the Ly Son Marine Protected Area Management Board to coordinate rescue and care.
The turtle will be released back into the wild after recovering its health. |
Through initial examination, the turtle was identified as a green turtle (also known as a green turtle), a species listed in the Vietnam and World Red Book, belonging to the group of endangered, rare animals that need strict protection. This individual is immature, weighing about 12kg.
Currently, the turtle is being raised by the Ly Son Marine Protected Area Management Board for monitoring and treatment until it is healthy enough to be returned to the natural environment.
