Hanh Phuc commune, located in Lao Cai province, was established by merging Tram Tau town, Xa Ho commune, Hat Luu commune, and Ban Cong commune (formerly part of Yen Bai province).

The appeal of Hanh Phuc commune

The new name, both familiar and unfamiliar, has attracted the attention of tourists exploring the Northwest mountainous region. Among them is photographer Vu Ngoc Thien. He visited Hanh Phuc commune on a day in July and captured beautiful moments that have captivated the hearts of many travel enthusiasts.

Vu Ngoc Thien told Tuoi Tre Online that his trip to Hanh Phuc commune stemmed from his desire to conquer Hang Te Cho waterfall in Lang Nhi commune - one of the "four deadly places" of Northwest Vietnam, formerly part of Yen Bai province.

"However, when I arrived here, I was surprised and attracted by the name of the new commune, Hanh Phuc (Happiness). I decided to take a series of photos of this place early in the morning, from 6:30 to 8:30."

"Early mornings offer soft, fresh light, making images more radiant and special than at other times of the day. The photos also become more beautiful and clear," shared Mr. Ngoc Thien.

A priceless moment of capturing the light.

Photographer Vu Ngoc Thien has visited Lao Cai province many times during his travels, photography trips, backpacking, and hiking, and this is his third time in Hanh Phuc commune. His previous two visits were for climbing Ta Xua mountain and for charity work at Ban Cong boarding school.

He said that the roads are now more convenient and easier to travel on than before, so getting to the shooting locations isn't difficult. On the other hand, he also researched the shooting locations beforehand to save time searching.

I've taken many photos in Ha Giang (now Tuyen Quang), Son La, Lao Cai… Because I've traveled and photographed so much, I have a special affection for this Northwest region. It's an indescribable feeling when I hold a camera and capture the natural scenery and people there.

Photographer Vu Ngoc Thien said he had seen many beautiful photo collections of the Northwest mountainous region. To stand out, he chose to focus on capturing beautiful moments and precious light rather than choosing the right frame.

“The curves of the terraced rice fields, the joyful smiles of the children… all these moments appeared as naturally as possible, with no staging involved in this photo series.”

"With the new name 'Happiness Commune' at a time of national transition, following the merger of localities that took place at the beginning of July, I also wanted to use this moment to express this new change. The light that begins a new day also marks the beginning of a new future that awaits," Mr. Ngoc Thien confided.

Vu Ngoc Thien, born in 1989, is a freelance photographer from Thai Binh (now Hung Yen). He specializes in landscape and travel photography.

From a bank employee (a graduate of the Banking Academy), Vu Ngoc Thien resigned to pursue his passion, travel more, and photograph the natural landscapes, culture, and people of Vietnam.
