According to RT on September 18, former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was accused of plotting a coup after his victory in the first round of last year's election was annulled.
Former candidate Calin Georgescu won the first round of Romania's presidential election in November 2024. He campaigned on national sovereignty, criticized NATO and EU membership, and opposed continued military aid to Ukraine.

However, his victory was annulled by the country's Constitutional Court, citing "irregularities" in the election campaign and "Russian interference" - allegations Moscow has denied. Mr Georgescu was banned from running altogether.
Romania's Attorney General Alex Florenta said on September 16 that Mr. Georgescu and 21 others had been indicted for trying to incite violence after the election results were annulled in December.
The prosecutor said that evidence gathered during the investigation showed that Mr. Georgescu had a secret meeting with Horatiu Potra, a military contractor formerly operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and discussed a plan to destabilize Bucharest.
"Potra was then arrested by traffic police on his way to the capital along with 'a paramilitary group' of 20 people armed with weapons and explosives," Romanian Prosecutor General Alex Florenta added.
Mr Georgescu, who retired from politics several months ago, denies any wrongdoing. His trial date has not yet been set.
