For every cadre, soldier and citizen of the Northwest, the image of General Vo Nguyen Giap will always live on. It is not only the story of the outstanding Commander-in-Chief associated with the victory that "resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world", but also the intimate moments, the care and love that the General had for the people here.
"I am deeply moved when thinking about General Vo Nguyen Giap, the eldest brother of the people's army, the outstanding Commander-in-Chief of our nation. Uncle Ho and the General, together with the Party Central Committee, made wise decisions, creating glorious victories for all of us, creating the brilliant Ho Chi Minh era" - Colonel Nguyen Huu Tai emotionally said.
95 years old, 77 years in the Party, 47 years in the army - Colonel Nguyen Huu Tai, former Political Commissar of Regiment 209, Division 312; former Deputy Director of the Military Training Department, General Staff still remembers clearly the days of selfless fighting on the Dien Bien Phu battlefield; especially the memories and impressions of General Vo Nguyen Giap, the person who inspired him as well as many comrades and teammates at that time.

Colonel Nguyen Huu Tai still remembers that around the beginning of April 1954, when he was the Political Commissar of Regiment 209, he was assigned by the Regiment Party Committee to Battalion 154 to join the battalion commander in organizing defense at Hill D1.
During the time he and Comrade Hoang Cam, the Regiment Commander, returned to the Command Headquarters to hold a conference to review the two campaigns, Mr. Tai was very impressed with the General's profound speech, which included praise, analysis of difficulties and pointing out shortcomings... But what he remembered most was the image of the General listening attentively and asking carefully about the details of the terrain and the soldiers' lives...
"The General paid special attention to the food, health, and accommodation of the soldiers in the fortifications at the D1 hill defense position. After finishing work, the Commander-in-Chief invited us to stay for lunch. The meal was wonderful, with fried pork, vegetable soup, and especially the caring and open atmosphere of the Commander-in-Chief with the officers returning from the battlefield. It was a joyful and unforgettable moment for us during a difficult and fierce campaign" - Colonel Nguyen Huu Tai recalled.
As for veteran Quàng Văn Khơ, in Muong E commune, Thuan Chau district, Son La - who, along with the laborers and youth volunteers, silently helped the army fill in bomb craters on Pha Din pass, the moment he met the General was an honor and pride that he will never forget for the rest of his life.

Mr. Kho said that after the Dien Bien Phu victory, he joined the army and was a soldier of the 148th Regiment stationed in Dien Bien. During the General's return visit to Dien Bien in 1955, Mr. Kho was honored to meet and hear words of encouragement and advice from the "big brother" of the army.
"Mr. Giap visited, shook hands with each person, and encouraged them to study and practice hard. Now that Dien Bien has been liberated, they must try to protect our country and our Fatherland. At that time, 5,000 people lined up along the entire Dien Bien yard to meet the General" - Veteran Quang Van Kho said.
Not only for cadres and soldiers, but also in the hearts of the ethnic people in the revolutionary base of Muong Phang, Dien Bien Phu City, the image of the talented General, close, caring, warm... remains intact.
The General's image and story are not only associated with the tunnels, huts, observation towers... at the Campaign Command Center that year, but also exist in the vast fields, supplied with irrigation water from Loong Luong Irrigation Lake, also known as "General's Lake" - a project invested in and built thanks to a letter the General wrote to the Politburo, the Government and the Central ministries and branches, after his visit to Muong Phang in 2004.
Every time he recounts the General's conversation with the people during his visit to Muong Phang, Mr. Lo Van Nui is filled with emotions: "Uncle Giap asked, if you came here for a week, could Muong Phang feed you? We answered yes, we could. Do the people of Muong Phang go to school? - Yes, everyone did, no one dropped out of school. Are the people of Muong Phang hungry? - No, sir. Then everyone clapped their hands and he left..."
