DAK LAK PROVINCE PEOPLE'S PROCURACY

According to the Dak Lak Provincial People's Procuracy, in the first 7 months of this year, the authorities in the province discovered and handled 6 cases with signs of crime related to the production and trade of counterfeit coffee powder. Of which, the Dak Lak Provincial Police Department has prosecuted and investigated 6 cases with 7 defendants for the crime of producing counterfeit food products. The court has tried 2 cases and 3 defendants. The total value of the discovered and seized infringing goods is more than 3.5 billion VND.

There have been many typical cases of fake coffee powder production, such as the one that occurred in Hoa Khanh Commune, Buon Ma Thuot City (Dak Lak). Here, the Economic Police Department of Dak Lak Province Police inspected, discovered and seized coffee powder products under the brands Lozio Coffee and Viet Hoang Coffee, produced by Doan Thi Minh Hue (46 years old), the business owner. These products are declared on the packaging to have a minimum caffeine content of 1%, the product ingredients include coffee types such as Arabica, Robusta, Moka, Catimor... However, through appraisal, the caffeine content in these coffee products is only from 0.08% to 0.23% (70% lower than the declaration and TCVN), according to the law, these are fake goods.

In July, the Economic Police Department of Dak Lak Province Police discovered a vehicle with a Quang Ngai license plate carrying more than 600 kg of ground coffee without invoices or documents proving its legal origin for sale in the province. The transporters confessed that the ground coffee was produced at the Tan Vinh Ky Company Limited branch (Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), then transported to sell in Dak Lak, Phu Yen, Quang Ngai, and Binh Dinh provinces.

During a search of the production facility, the investigation agency discovered 12,830 packages of ground coffee with many brands, the packaging listed the ingredients of many types of coffee, with caffeine content ranging from 1% to 2%. However, the actual caffeine content in the product was only from 0.0021% to 0.11%, 70% lower than the caffeine content registered for quality declaration on the packaging label. The suspects confessed that these ground coffee products were produced according to a formula using 70% soybeans, 10% corn and 20% coffee; some types did not contain coffee, added industrial butter, flavorings, colorants, etc.

The Dak Lak Provincial Police Department has initiated a case, prosecuted the accused and issued a temporary detention order for the accused for the crime of producing and trading in counterfeit food products in this case.
