In the context of rice research and development playing a key role in improving agricultural productivity and efficiency, assessing the potential of new rice varieties is a necessary activity.
In the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, Ninh Binh Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, Gia Vien District Department of Agriculture and Environment coordinated with ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company to deploy a testing model of TBH 456 rice variety on a scale of 28 sao at Hoa Tien Cooperative.
The objective of the model is to monitor growth, development, adaptability, pest resistance, yield and quality of TBH 456 rice variety compared to the control variety VT 404, thereby providing objective assessments to serve the recommendation and replication of potential rice varieties.
Monitoring results showed that TBH 456 rice variety had a germination rate 2% higher than the control variety.
The variety shows strong tillering ability, with a maximum number of tillers reaching 10/clump, 1 tiller/clump higher than VT 404.
Notably, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the damage caused by major pests on TBH 456 variety such as small leaf roller, brown planthopper, white-backed planthopper, brown leaf blight, leaf blast, neck blast, and neck spike diseases were all lower than the control variety.
Regarding yield and yield components, TBH 456 variety recorded positive indicators: The number of flowers/m² of TBH 456 is 7.5 flowers more than VT 404.
The rate of empty grains of TBH 456 is 2% lower than that of the control variety. The theoretical yield of TBH 456 is 13 kg/sao higher than that of VT 404 variety.
Summarizing the demonstration results, the professional units as well as the farmers participating in the model all agreed that the TBH 456 rice variety is a potential rice variety with strong tillering ability, long flowering time, good lodging resistance and moderate resistance to pests and diseases.
The variety has the characteristics of long, close-packed seeds, large, yellow-green leaves, hard stems, compact clumps and a high percentage of solid seeds.
To have a more comprehensive basis for assessing adaptability and production efficiency, the conference proposed to continue to demonstrate TBH 456 rice variety in some other localities in the province in the following crops.
At the same time, farmers are advised to follow the cultivation process, especially the balanced and reasonable use of fertilizers to maximize the yield and quality potential of the variety.
Monitoring and evaluation of cold tolerance, lodging resistance and resistance to major pests and diseases will continue in the coming crops.
