News outlets report that director Roger Allers passed away on January 17th (local time) at his home in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 76. A spokesperson for Disney Animation confirmed to the site that the veteran filmmaker died after a short illness.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, shared in a statement: "Roger Allers was a brilliant creator whose contributions to Disney will endure for generations. Roger Allers was born in 1949 in New York (USA). He showed an early passion for animation and later studied fine arts at Arizona State University. Allers made his directorial debut with the Walt Disney animated film The Lion King alongside director Rob Minkoff. The film achieved tremendous box office success, grossing approximately $979 million worldwide , becoming the highest-grossing film of 1994. Allers also adapted the screenplay for the Broadway musical The Lion King with Irene Mecchi, earning him a Tony Award nomination in 1998 for Best Musical Screenplay.

Before achieving fame with The Lion King, Roger Allers worked on several other Disney animated films: Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid… He also contributed to the development of Tron (1982), the first major feature film to extensively use CGI.
