The director of 'The Lion King' has passed away.

According to The Hollywood Reporter on January 19th (Vietnam time), director Roger Allers – the renowned filmmaker behind Disney's hit animated film 'The Lion King' – has passed away after a battle with illness.

Director Roger Allers has passed away at the age of 76.

News outlets report that director Roger Allers passed away on January 17th (local time) at his home in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 76. A spokesperson for Disney Animation confirmed to the site that the veteran filmmaker died after a short illness.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, shared in a statement: "Roger Allers was a brilliant creator whose contributions to Disney will endure for generations. He understood the power of great storytelling – how unforgettable characters, emotions, and music can come together to create a timeless masterpiece." He paid tribute to the late director: "His work helped shape an era of animation that continues to inspire audiences worldwide, and we are deeply grateful for all that he contributed to Disney. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues."

Meanwhile, The Lion King producer Don Hahn wrote in his tribute: "Sometimes life gives us someone who helps us see things more clearly. For me and many who worked with Roger, he was just that. He was a rare individual: always curious, joyful, insightful, and eager to tell stories that reminded us of the wonder of life. He lives on in his works and in the hearts of all of us who were fortunate enough to know him."

Roger Allers is best known for the animated film The Lion King (1994).

Roger Allers was born in 1949 in New York (USA). He showed an early passion for animation and later studied fine arts at Arizona State University. Allers made his directorial debut with the Walt Disney animated film The Lion King alongside director Rob Minkoff. The film achieved tremendous box office success, grossing approximately $979 million worldwide , becoming the highest-grossing film of 1994. Allers also adapted the screenplay for the Broadway musical The Lion King with Irene Mecchi, earning him a Tony Award nomination in 1998 for Best Musical Screenplay.

Before achieving fame with The Lion King, Roger Allers worked on several other Disney animated films: Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid… He also contributed to the development of Tron (1982), the first major feature film to extensively use CGI. Other works he worked on include: Watership Down, The Bugs Bunny/Road-Runner Movie, Return to Never Land, Ted, Back to the Jurassic, Ted 2… Allers also received an Oscar nomination for Best Short Animated Film for The Little Matchgirl (2006).

This talented director has made many contributions to Disney as well as the field of animation.

Regarding his personal life, director Roger Allers married Leslee Hackenson in 1977, and they were together for over 40 years before divorcing in 2020. They have two children together.
