The mark of white blouses in the heart of the flood zone.

In late November, medical teams from various provinces arrived to support Dak Lak province in the communes most severely affected by the recent historic floods.

They brought not only medicine and medical equipment, but also compassion, a sense of responsibility, and heartfelt concern for the people in the flood-stricken areas.

From 5 a.m., the white blouses of the Dong Nai Provincial Medical Team could be seen in the hall of Son Thanh commune. They made the most of every minute preparing the examination tables, checking each medicine box and each gift to welcome the people in the best possible conditions. Dr. Duong Hoai Vu, Head of the Emergency Department of Thong Nhat General Hospital, confided: "After the flood, all sorts of diseases will lurk. We just hope to arrive as quickly and early as possible to help our compatriots."

For the people of Son Thanh commune, especially the elderly and young children who have endured days of rising floodwaters, isolation, and deprivation, they come to the medical check-up not only to receive medicine but also to find a sense of peace after a series of exhausting days.

Holding her infant child, just over a year old, Ms. Le Thi Thao said that she is still in shock from the devastating flood. “For several days after the flood, the weather was cold, and my child coughed constantly, but we didn’t have the opportunity to take him to the doctor. Upon receiving the notification from the commune, I immediately took my child to the doctor. The doctors examined him very attentively and gave very thorough instructions on how to keep him healthy in the current environmental and weather conditions.”

In just one morning, nearly 2,000 people received medical examinations and medication. Outside the hall, medical personnel continued to spread out to neighboring communes to disinfect and clean the environment – an urgent task after the floods. Despite the short notice and long distance required to support Dak Lak province, the Dong Nai Department of Health and its medical staff had made thorough preparations regarding basic medical equipment and necessary medications.

Traveling hundreds of kilometers, doctors and nurses from Au Co Hospital (Dong Nai province) urgently set off for the eastern part of Dak Lak province – where people are struggling to overcome the consequences of the devastating floods. Everyone was determined to arrive as soon as possible so that the people wouldn't have to wait another day in hardship.

The road leading to Tay Hoa commune and Dong Hoa ward left the entire team speechless. Electricity had not yet been restored, clean water was scarce, the ground had collapsed in long stretches, and many houses still bore the marks of the floodwaters. Amidst this desolate scene after the natural disaster, the presence of the medical team brought warmth to the people in this flood-stricken area.

At over 4 a.m., while the night was still thick with darkness, the team arrived at the Tay Hoa Commune People's Committee. A quick breakfast was served at the assembly point, and then everyone quickly got to work, preparing to open the examination point in time to serve the people.

The most touching moment for the team was when, after the morning check-up in Tay Hoa commune had just finished, as they were tidying up to quickly eat lunch before continuing their work in Dong Hoa ward, another group of people unexpectedly arrived, having heard that doctors from Au Co Hospital were providing free check-ups. Without being asked, everyone set up tables, prepared medicine, and erected a makeshift examination station right in front of the commune's People's Committee office.

In just one day, more than 700 households received health check-ups and consultations. Over 900 support packages, including medicine, essential first-aid kits, and necessities, were delivered directly to each household.

Five task forces from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health also traveled hundreds of kilometers to reach the people in the flood-stricken areas in time.

The Dong Hoa Ward Health Station now only has a few makeshift tables and chairs, many functional rooms are still leaking, and the walls are stained with white mud. Yet, in just a short time, the place is bustling with footsteps, patients calling out to each other, and doctors gently inquiring about their well-being.

Doctors and medical staff divided into specialized examination areas to make it easier for people to access services. In addition to health check-ups, dispensing medicine, and giving gifts to the people, the doctors also instructed each household on how to prevent infectious diseases after the floods, such as washing hands with clean water, disinfecting water sources, boiling food, and preventing children from playing in stagnant water.

Besides providing medical treatment, doctors and medical staff in Ho Chi Minh City also support local health stations in restoring the process of classifying cases, inventorying medications, checking emergency cabinets, providing guidance on handling severe cases, and coordinating referrals when necessary.

And so, the five task forces spread throughout the communes and wards of Dong Hoa, Dong Xuan, Hoa Thinh, Hoa Xuan, and O Loan. Working diligently and devotedly, these white-coated workers left a beautiful impression with their dedication, spirit of sharing, and deep compassion for the people.

Walking amidst dilapidated houses, their eyes still reflecting the lingering anxiety after the storm and floods, the doctors and nurses only wished they could do more. Despite the lack of resources, the harsh weather, the meager meals of cold canned food, and the makeshift sleeping arrangements in their vehicles… no one complained. The dedication of the commune officials and the local medical team made their work even smoother and filled with compassion.
