Attending the 5th National Professional Stage Arts Festival on "The Image of the Police Soldier", Nghe An Province Traditional Arts Center brought a work that made a strong impression: The Nghe Tinh folk song drama "Khong Ngai". Surpassing the form of a normal drama, the staged performance with Nghe folk songs by director Dr. Meritorious Artist Bui Nhu Lai really attracted the audience to the Army Theater on the morning of July 1.
Meritorious Artist Thuy Kien (as Mrs. Lieu) and Artist Duy Thanh (as Hong Son) sang and acted excellently.
"Don't Fall" does not choose to tell a simple, linear success story. The work by scriptwriter Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong was adapted by People's Artist Nguyen An Ninh, directed by musician Tran Quoc Chung and performed by People's Artist Tran Minh Tue, convincing the audience even though it was a choice of a thorny direction. The main character - police officer Hong Son - is not a flawless "hero". He used to be a brave undercover officer, who had many achievements in major drug cases. But then, during the process of infiltration, he fell into a trap, falling into a spiral of addiction. A fatal fall not only tormented the body but also tore apart the honor, dignity and self-respect of the soldier.
Unexpected situations attract viewers around the story "Don't fall"
However, what makes Hong Son different - and also the soul of this work that many directors have staged - is that: he does not fall down and he also inspires many others not to fall down. He stands up, with all his remaining will, with the strength from the memory of his father who fell while protecting his comrades, with the silent tolerance of his uncle, who was his father's comrade - Mr. Thai. The words of Hong Son's father in the past echo like an oath to himself: "Falling down is only afraid of not knowing how to stand up. When you fall, do not cry, do not rely on others, but know how to stand up."

The play cleverly uses psychological techniques, interweaving layers of past - present, ideal - mistake, reason - desire. In particular, when Hong Son decides to return to the "battlefield" with an undercover mission to approach the VSC Group - a transnational drug trafficking organization - he not only faces danger, but also suspicion, contempt, and inner turmoil. He must find a way to wash away the "stain" that cannot be washed away with the Lam River water. He is not allowed to die, and even more so, is not allowed to fail, because behind him is the honor of a police officer, the memory of his father who heroically sacrificed.
The spatial treatment, memories and obsession of the character Hong Son in the play "Not Falling" by director Dr. - Meritorious Artist Bui Nhu Lai
The "reformation" journey in the play is not just about solving the case. It is a moral and emotional journey, where Hong Son not only exposes the traitor - Dao Nguyen Phong - a corrupt soldier, but also touches the heart of La Bach Van - the female president of the crime syndicate, so that she chooses to turn around and cooperate in solving the case. In the end, as an echo of the play's title, no one has to fall, because even those who have strayed from the line of right and wrong still have the opportunity to choose again. The power of "Not Falling" that Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong wrote is right there - an epic that is not monochrome but multi-dimensional, humane but still very realistic.

The choice of the Nghe Tinh folk opera genre also contributes to creating a special personality for the play, evoking deep emotions, associated with the cultural roots of Nghe An - a land famous for its resilience and loyalty. The work is a clear demonstration of the ability to convey political topics - which are often dry - in an emotional, multi-layered theatrical language. This success comes from the resonance of an experienced, artistically sensitive and politically steadfast team.
Staging the folk song drama Nghe Tinh, Meritorious Artist Bui Nhu Lai exploited the theme of the people's police soldier as a clear demonstration of the ability to harmoniously combine political themes and folk materials in contemporary stage art. There, he built the important issue of placing the right song, the right mood, honoring the image of the soldier who is not as dry as the propaganda model, but appears close, rich in emotions and has humanistic depth. From everyday details to inner struggles while performing duties, the character is vividly portrayed through the smooth, soulful Vi and Giam melodies - a musical specialty of Nghe An.

The valuable thing is that although exploiting the political and social theme, the play still maintains simplicity, not imposing, but touching people's hearts with sincerity and simplicity. Especially the cast including: Duy Thanh (Hong Son), Meritorious Artist Thuy Kien (Mrs. Lieu), Meritorious Artist Thanh Vinh (as Mrs. Thai), Meritorious Artist Duc Lam (as Phuong), Meritorious Artist Viet Anh (as Bach Van), Meritorious Artist Minh Thong (as Phong), Meritorious Artist Minh Thanh (as Thanh Lam)... sang and performed so sweetly. It is the smoothness in the melody, the tenderness in the emotions and the sophistication in the staging that helped the play become an artistic work with both ideological and aesthetic value, contributing to enriching the appearance of the local stage with a strong regional identity.
