There are Ferraris that have become legends, and the F40 is already one of Maranello's iconic masterpieces, but there is an even rarer version – born not only for the street but also for the track, that is the F40LM. Developed by Michelotto to compete in both IMSA in the US and FIA-GT in Europe, just 19 of the ultra-rare F40 LMs were built. One of these masterpieces will appear at Monterey Car Week next month – and it could become the most expensive F40 ever sold.
This car, chassis number 95448, was the 14th LM produced, and was one of the few upgraded to GTC trim, making it the most powerful variant of all the F40s. RM Sotheby's estimates the Ferrari F40 will fetch between $8.5 million and $9.5 million, a modest figure for something so special. It was originally delivered to a collector in St. Moritz, Switzerland, who already owned several other Ferraris. The car then competed in events in Italy, France, Spain and the Czech Republic before returning to Michelotto in 2014 for an engine and gearbox overhaul and a return to its original Rosso Corsa livery – Ferrari’s iconic red.
This F40 LM is now ready for its next owner. Prior to the auction, it was thoroughly serviced with a new fuel tank. There are also belts, spark plugs, fuel filters, and brand new Michelin Pilot Sport GT Slick S7M tires. Under the lightweight carbon body is the familiar 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8, but in the LM, The car has been upgraded to a whopping 760 horsepower – 289 more than the standard F40. And thanks to a reduction of around 317 kg, the car weighs just 1,050 kg when fully fueled.
