In the digital age, children have easy access to global culture, making early patriotic education crucial. Many education experts assert that the family is the first and most important school for shaping a child's character. When parents know how to integrate cultural values into daily life, patriotism will naturally take root in their children's hearts.

Instead of focusing on theoretical lectures in the classroom, many parents choose to accompany their children through practical experiences, fostering patriotism in them from simple things. Through stories about the Hung Kings who founded the nation, the heroic battles of our army, historical figures, or experiential activities steeped in tradition, children gradually form an initial understanding of national traditions, awakening love for their homeland and national pride.

According to Ms. Lam Bao Ngoc, a resident of Rach Gia ward, family education is the first and most important foundation for forming patriotism in each individual. From familiar things like respecting grandparents, being filial to parents, loving their birthplace, and being grateful to previous generations, children will gradually develop an awareness of their roots and national pride. If these values are sown early, they will become natural and enduring feelings throughout their lives.

Concerned about instilling love for her homeland and country in her children, Ms. Ngoc's family takes them to visit museums and historical sites, tells them historical stories about national heroes, and participates in cultural experiences and festivals of the province. Recently, Ms. Ngoc's family visited the Mo So Mountain National Historical and Scenic Site in Kien Luong commune. Mo So was an important revolutionary base of our army and people during the two wars of resistance against France and the United States. This site has immense value in terms of history, culture, tourism , and educating the people about revolutionary traditions and patriotism.

“Visiting the Mo So Mountain National Historical and Scenic Site, my children were very excited and asked many questions about history. Through listening to the explanations, they understood more about the sacrifices and hardships of previous generations in the struggle to protect the homeland, expressing their deep gratitude and pride. I hope each trip will nurture a love for their homeland and country in my children,” Ms. Ngoc shared.

Mr. and Mrs. Ngo Van Luc, residents of Vinh Thong ward, teach their children about history and patriotism on special occasions, such as the Liberation Day of the South and National Reunification Day on April 30th, National Day on September 2nd, and Lunar New Year. Mr. Luc recounts the heroic historical stories of the Vietnamese people to help his children understand the sacrifices and hardships of previous generations so that they can live in peace. Through this, he instills in them the moral principle of remembering their roots and showing gratitude to their ancestors who contributed to building and defending the nation. The couple also takes time to take their children to see major historical events and important historical anniversaries; and participates in activities recreating historical contexts, rich in traditional elements, so that their children have the opportunity to experience them firsthand.

Mr. Luc often advises his children that if they want to demonstrate patriotism, they must study hard and live gratefully. Mr. Luc stated: “History education shouldn't just be about recounting the past, but needs to connect with the present and the future. Children need to be inspired to understand that knowing history helps them appreciate the past and continue that spirit in building a strong nation, thereby developing a sense of responsibility towards themselves, their families, and society.”

For many families, patriotism isn't something distant; it begins with connecting with the most familiar things. This includes helping children understand the meaning and value of the national flag, the traditional Vietnamese dress (áo dài), and working with them to "beautify" their homeland through activities like disposing of trash properly, planting trees, and teaching them to conserve electricity and water. These early actions help children understand that patriotism requires action, not just words.

Educating children about love for their homeland and country is not only a duty but also an emotional journey, where those who sow the seeds of love also nurture faith and national pride from the innocent eyes and young hearts of children. The family plays a special role, being the first cultural "cradle" that shapes a person's character, in which education and nurturing are two key factors that determine the character of each individual.
