Effectively conveying the message of transformation and green, clean, and sustainable development.
Speaking at the 8th "Managers - Journalists - Businesses with Resources and Environment" Forum in 2024, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh highly appreciated the success of the forum in each edition.
According to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh, the business community's understanding of sustainable business practices and reducing environmental emissions has significantly improved recently.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh delivered a speech at the 8th Forum "Managers - Journalists - Businesses with Natural Resources and Environment" 2024 with the theme "Green Economy - the Responsibility of Producers".
Many businesses have adopted green business practices as a strategy and competitive advantage. Numerous large corporations and enterprises have also quickly jumped on board, accelerating green transformation to address climate change and develop a low-carbon economy, aiming for Net Zero.
However, this change has mainly occurred in large enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises, while small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which account for a significant number, have not received adequate attention and have not shown clear progress. Therefore, in the coming period, businesses need to be determined to make a strong transformation, especially by improving their understanding and awareness of their responsibilities in protecting the environment and responding to climate change, and grasping relevant regulations both domestically and internationally.
"From that practical experience, it is clear that in the coming period, we need strong policies to concretize the viewpoint 'Investing in the environment is investing in sustainable development'; at the same time, mobilizing social resources and the support of the international community. Accordingly, we will propose a new system of viewpoints and new thinking to meet the context of the vision until 2050. The overarching viewpoint is that the State plays a creative and leading role, businesses and people are the center and subjects of implementation, along with the participation of political and social organizations..." - Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh said.
According to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh, the overarching principle is that the State plays a facilitating and leading role, while businesses and citizens are the central and active participants, along with the involvement of socio-political organizations...
Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh emphasized and requested that each delegate attending the Forum, in their position, role, and responsibilities, act as an ambassador to effectively spread and convey the message of green, clean, and sustainable transformation and development; each meaningful activity of yours will make an important contribution to resource management, environmental protection, and adaptation to climate change.
Policy mechanisms are needed to support green businesses.
At the 8th Forum "Managers - Journalists - Businesses with Resources and Environment" – 2024, themed "Green Economy - Producer Responsibility," delegates focused on issues related to green development in businesses: responsibilities and obstacles hindering businesses from practicing sustainable development; discussions on policy frameworks to support green businesses; and the role of the media in accompanying, promoting, and accelerating the green transformation of the economy, both in terms of policy and business operations.
Regarding the current state of the green economy in Vietnam, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho, Director of the Institute of Strategy, Policy and Resources and Environment - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, shared: In 2020, the size of Vietnam's green economy reached 6.7 billion USD, equivalent to 2% of GDP.
In recent years, Vietnam's green economic growth rate has decreased to approximately 10-12% per year; currently, its estimated size is 4-4.5% of the national economy. The transition to a green economy is a mandatory requirement worldwide, with the circular economy model serving as a key tool.
Delegates attending the 8th Forum "Managers - Journalists - Businesses with Resources and Environment" 2024 with the theme "Green Economy - the Responsibility of Producers".
According to Ms. Chu Thi Kim Thanh, Operations Director of the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance (PROVIETNAM), businesses are considered a "spearhead" and "crucial" force for the growth and development of the circular economy and green growth. We expect that the regulations on waste sorting at source, and regulations on waste collection, transportation, and treatment in the 2020 Environmental Protection Law will be seriously and effectively implemented by localities. Only then will we truly have a complete system for waste sorting, collection, transportation, and recycling.
Within the framework of the forum, two discussion sessions were also held, including: A discussion session on "Green Economy - The Responsibility of Producers," with speakers including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho, Director of the Institute of Strategy, Policy and Resources and Environment; Mr. Tran Quang Dung, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrovietnam); and Ms. Chu Thi Kim Thanh, Operations Director of the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance – PROVIETNAM.

During the panel discussion, speakers presented an overall picture of green economic development in Vietnam, from practical realities to policies, as well as the role of businesses and manufacturers in building a low-emission economy that aligns with global climate change regulations.
