Defendant Nguyen Phuong Hang was sentenced to 3 years in prison.
After a day of trial, at 7:45 p.m. on September 21, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court sentenced defendant Nguyen Phuong Hang and her accomplices.
Previously, the panel of judges determined that the defendants' confessions were consistent with the complaint, the appraisal report and the documents in the case file and had sufficient basis to determine that defendant Nguyen Phuong Hang had organized livestreams fabricating, defaming and insulting Mr. Vo Hoai Linh, Huynh Minh Hung, Nguyen Duc Hien...
Defendant Dang Anh Quan played a role in encouraging and assisting defendant Hang in committing the crime. Defendant Quan disagrees with the charges and believes that he was wrongly convicted, which is his right. However, based on the documents, evidence, appraisal results, and statements of the defendants, there is sufficient basis to determine that defendant Dang Anh Quan violated the law.
According to the panel of judges, the defendants’ criminal acts are dangerous to society, violate social order, and the defendants have taken advantage of democratic freedoms to livestream, infringing on the honor and reputation of individuals and organizations, and negatively affecting security. Therefore, the panel of judges found that the defendants committed the crime of “Abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State, the rights and legitimate interests of organizations and individuals”.
The defendants confessed honestly, repented, and committed the crime for the first time. Defendant Nguyen Phuong Hang received many certificates of merit for her charitable contributions, so this was the basis for the panel of judges to consider when sentencing.
For the above reasons, the People's Court sentenced defendant Nguyen Phuong Hang to 3 years in prison and defendant Dang Anh Quan to 2 years and 6 months in prison.
