In recent years, the voluntary blood donation movement (VBD) in Quang Ninh has become one of the most vibrant and meaningful activities, with typical examples of blood donation with a positive and voluntary spirit. This has created a widespread influence for all classes of people to participate in VBD.
Typical examples
As a member of the Quang Ninh Live Blood Bank Club, Pham Tien Anh (31 years old, residing in Bai Chay Ward, Ha Long City) said: The first time I donated blood was when I was a student at Hai Phong Polytechnic College (in 2012). At that time, I was a bit nervous, but seeing my friends participating, I became more confident. After donating blood for about 5 minutes, I was very surprised, I did not think that donating blood was so simple.
After graduating in 2015, Pham Tien Anh worked at a bank in Ha Long City. Here, he actively participated in blood donation activities organized by Bai Chay Ward and Ha Long City and met and interacted with youth union members and volunteers in blood donation clubs in the province. In 2016, Pham Tien Anh became a member of the Quang Ninh Live Blood Bank Club, directly participating in blood donation at the Provincial General Hospital and Bai Chay Hospital.
At the Provincial General Hospital, doctors said that Pham Tien Anh's platelet count was higher than average, while platelets were scarce, so he switched to donating platelets. According to Pham Tien Anh, patients often need platelets immediately and the donation period only needs to be one month apart, not three months like whole blood donation.
Up to now, Pham Tien Anh has participated in HMTN 25 times. "About a year ago, I participated in donating platelets for a patient with a serious illness being treated at Bai Chay Hospital. After donating blood, I saw that his eyes seemed to be healthy again, I was very happy because the patient continued to maintain life. But about a month later, I heard that the patient had passed away, I felt disappointed, but that was also the motivation for me to continue participating in HMTN" - Pham Tien Anh confided.
Energetic and enthusiastic is the image of Nguyen Phuong Anh (33 years old), Secretary of the Youth Union of Mao Khe Ward (Dong Trieu Town), who has participated in blood donation 21 times in a row. Promoting the pioneering spirit of youth, while sharing the difficulties with patients in need of blood, in 2009, when he was a student at the National Academy of Public Administration, Nguyen Phuong Anh participated in blood donation organized by the school. After graduating and returning to work in his hometown, participating in the Youth Union's work, he always determined that blood donation is a meaningful job, contributing a small part of his blood to help treat and save patients.
Growing up from the Youth Union activities, Nguyen Phuong Anh participates in the Blood Donation Campaign organized by the Dong Trieu Town Blood Donation Campaign Steering Committee every year. In early 2021, a friend posted on social media that her father had an accident and was being treated at the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital in dire need of blood. At that time, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, blood reserves at hospitals were very scarce. Upon receiving the information, Nguyen Phuong Anh drove straight to the hospital to give blood to the patient.
Not only directly participating in blood donation many times, Nguyen Phuong Anh also has a lot of experience in propaganda activities, widely mobilizing union members, members, volunteers and people to participate in blood donation. As a Youth Union officer, he proactively advised the Mao Khe Ward Blood Donation Steering Committee to propagate the purpose and significance of blood donation to cadres, union members and people in the area.
The above are just 2 of 22 outstanding individuals honored by the Provincial People's Committee as "Outstanding Blood Donors of Quang Ninh Province in 2023" on June 18, 2023.
Spread the blood donation movement
Among the 22 outstanding individuals in the HMTN activities honored by the Provincial People's Committee in 2023, Vice President of the Red Cross Society of Tien Yen district Trinh Thi Hang has participated in HMTN 16 consecutive times. Not only that, Ms. Hang also plays an important role in advising, proposing, and developing plans to organize HMTN activities in Tien Yen district.
Ms. Trinh Thi Hang said that when she started working at the Tien Yen District Red Cross Association (in 2014), the district’s blood donation activities were not really given much attention. The staff, civil servants, and public employees at agencies, units, and localities were still hesitant to participate in blood donation. Therefore, the blood donation campaign encountered many difficulties, with only one blood donation campaign organized each year with the amount of blood collected reaching only over 100 units.
In order to spread the blood donation movement throughout the district, Ms. Hang directly participated in donating blood to prove that donating blood is not harmful to health, but rather has the noble meaning of saving lives.
From 2014 to now, Ms. Hang has often donated blood twice a year. At the same time, she has also advised the District Blood Donation Steering Committee to promote propaganda about the purpose and significance of blood donation to civil servants, union members, youth, and volunteers in the district, in order to raise awareness about blood donation; clearly understand the urgent need for blood for medical treatment and saving lives. Thanks to that, blood donation activities have spread widely among civil servants, civil servants, and volunteers in agencies, units, localities, as well as the people of the whole district.
Every year, Tien Yen district organizes blood donation campaigns twice, the amount of blood collected each year is always higher than the previous year. In 2022, Tien Yen district organized two blood donation campaigns with 600 registered participants, receiving 539 units of blood, exceeding 120% of the planned target assigned by the province.
The participation of typical examples has made the blood donation movement in Quang Ninh more widespread in the community. This is specifically demonstrated by the amount of blood donated each year is always higher than the previous year. According to data from the Provincial Red Cross Association, within 10 years (2008-2018), the total amount of blood received in the province was 64,768 units. Specifically, in 2008, the whole province received only 2,807 units, but by 2018, the total amount of blood received in the whole province was 9,500 units, an increase of 6,697 units compared to 2008.
In 4 years (2019-2022), the total amount of blood received in the province is 62,510 units. Specifically, in 2019, the whole province received 15,970 units; in 2020, it received 12,570 units; in 2021, it received 15,408 units of blood; in 2022, it was 18,962 units. In the first 6 months of 2023, the whole province organized 44 blood donation campaigns, with more than 11,000 people registering to participate, collecting 10,434 units of blood, reaching 63.6% of the blood target in 2023. Quang Ninh ranked 13th out of 63 provinces and cities nationwide in terms of the rate of people participating in blood donation.
Mr. Vu Hong Hai, Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross Association, Standing member of the Provincial Steering Committee for Blood Donation, said: The above results show that the province's blood donation activities have spread strongly in the community in recent times. In particular, there has been active participation of civil servants, union members, youth, volunteers, armed forces, workers in industrial parks, economic groups, etc. Therefore, the amount of blood received is organized continuously from the grassroots to the provincial level. The whole province currently has 177 Red Cross volunteer teams; there are over 8,200 volunteers participating in blood donation activities; each year, dozens of volunteers are honored as exemplary blood donors.
According to Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross Association Vu Hong Hai, blood donation activities in the province have recently received close attention and direction from the province to the grassroots level. The province has also paid attention to investing in infrastructure systems with 4 hospitals directly organizing and receiving blood donation activities including: Provincial General Hospital, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and Bai Chay Hospital. Thereby, ensuring blood sources to serve the treatment of patients.
Typically, the CTĐ Blood Donation Point at Bai Chay Hospital was established in December 2020, a fixed blood donation point, facilitating the receipt of blood from patients' relatives, volunteers, students and people to donate blood on all days of the week. Thereby, helping the hospital proactively source blood on-site to serve treatment, reduce treatment time and costs for patients.
In the coming time, Dam Ha district will establish a Blood Center with equipment to receive and store blood to ensure blood supply for patients in the Eastern region. At the same time, the Provincial Red Cross Association signed a humanitarian activity with Amata Group, Song Khoai Industrial Park (Quang Yen Town), including the participation of the voluntary blood donation movement of the labor force. The Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation promotes the organization of blood donation activities through the Humanitarian Month; "Pink Spring Festival", the campaign "Pink Summer Blood Drops", "National Blood Donation Day"... to further develop this movement.
