According to the schedule, on January 5, candidates will take written exams in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, History, Geography, English, Russian, French, Chinese and a computer programming exam in Information Technology.

On January 6, candidates continued to take written exams in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology; oral exams in English, Russian, French, Chinese; and computer programming exams in Information Technology.

The total number of candidates taking the national exam for excellent students in the 2023-2024 school year is 5,819, an increase of 1,230 candidates compared to last year. Of the total 12 subjects of this exam, Literature and English are the subjects with the most candidates, with 648 and 639 candidates respectively. The exam will have 68 examination councils with a total of 403 examination rooms.

Previously, on October 10, 2023, the Ministry of Education and Training issued a Circular on the Regulations on the National Excellent Student Selection Exam with many new points. In particular, the Regulations stipulate that the maximum number of candidates for each exam subject of each unit is 10 candidates, and 20 candidates for Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

This regulation also stipulates that instead of organizing practical exams in the national excellent student selection exam, the exam questions for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology will have content that requires candidates to solve using knowledge related to experimental and practical skills.

The new regulations also increase the percentage of candidates winning prizes in the national excellent student selection exam, ensuring compliance with the regulations of regional and international Olympics. Accordingly, 60% of candidates will win prizes from the Encouragement Prize or higher (previous years were 50%); in which, the total number of First, Second, and Third prizes will not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes, the number of First prizes will not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes.
