For children to develop comprehensively in the 4.0 era

On the occasion of the 84th anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers Team (May 15, 1941 - May 15, 2025), Bac Kan Newspaper had a conversation with teacher Hoang Thi Thu Mai, Team Leader, who was awarded the "Pink Swallow" Award in 2024 by the Central Team Council, currently working at Nong Ha Secondary School, Cho Moi District.

Reporter: It is known that Nong Ha Secondary School, despite many difficulties in terms of facilities, is one of the typical units in the province with a long history of outstanding achievements. Could you briefly introduce the results that the Union has achieved in recent times?

Teacher Hoang Thi Mai: With innovation in content and implementation methods, the work of the Team and the children's movement at the Union have had positive changes; contributing to the work of caring for, protecting andeducating teenagers and children.

In recent years, Nong Ha Secondary School's Union has achieved achievements such as: 6 consecutive years of achieving the title of Excellent Strong Union at the provincial level (from the 2018 - 2019 school year to present); Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of Bac Kan Provincial People's Committee awarded "Union for outstanding achievements in the work of the Union and the children's movement" on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers; Certificate of Merit from the Standing Committee of the Provincial Youth Union awarded "Union for outstanding achievements in implementing the small-scale plan movement" in the period 2018 - 2023; Certificate of Merit from the Central Executive Committee of the Youth Union for "Union for outstanding achievements in the work of the Union and the children's movement" in the 2022 - 2023 school year...

Recently, Nong Ha Secondary School's Union had 1 student receive the National Kim Dong Award for the 2024-2025 school year. This is a great, noble award for team members nationwide.

Teacher in charge of the Young Pioneers - Hoang Thi Thu Mai received the "Pink Swallow" award in 2024 presented by the Central Young Pioneers Council.

After nearly 10 years of working as a Music teacher and a Team Leader, I was fortunate to achieve the title of excellent Team Leader at the provincial level in the 2021-2022 school year. For four consecutive years from the 2019-2020 school year to the 2022-2023 school year, I achieved the title of grassroots emulation fighter. I was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee as a typical example in the patriotic emulation movement of Bac Kan province in the period of 2021-2023... These are all very meaningful milestones. However, the greatest happiness is still being able to accompany the children on their journey to adulthood, seeing them, despite their lack and difficulties, still strive to rise up and continue the fine tradition of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers.

Reporter: Looking back on nearly 10 years of working with the Young Pioneers, how do you feel about the changes in children in each period, especially in today's digital society?

Teacher Hoang Thi Thu Mai: I still remember, when I first started working, all activities of collecting information and reporting tasks had to be sent in writing. The distance between schools, communes, districts, and provinces was quite far, making the working environment of students at that time much narrower.

Nowadays, the development of 4.0 technology has erased the distance of space and time thanks to the fast speed of the Internet. Therefore, through cyberspace, team members can access many initiatives and models that contribute to improving the quality of Team work in schools. The team presents reports through images, media clips and is spread through channels such as Facebook, Zalo. Thanks to that, the spread of Team activities towards children is faster and more profound.

However, besides the positive aspects, there are still some problems that directly affect students such as: Students abuse social networks too much, leading to impacts on health and learning; lack of direct communication skills; spreading unhealthy information. In addition, the reality of cyber violence also tends to increase, causing many students to suffer psychological trauma, affecting their personality development.

Reporter: Faced with these challenges, what do you think the Youth Union should do to guide, accompany and support the children to firmly overcome them?

Teacher Hoang Thi Thu Mai: From practical work as well as my own experiences, in my opinion, to develop the Team work, we can focus on a number of key solutions. First, it is to innovate the way the Team operates, directing children towards more experiential activities. Ideal educational content for children must be specifically designed, easy to understand, linked to traditional activities, with topics, themes..., encouraging students to apply information technology to make propaganda videos in team and group activities.

Maintain the school psychological counseling team model to listen to and respect students' views and opinions; care, share, encourage and motivate students in life. Through the counseling team, teachers can support students in orienting their thinking, choosing the right actions, helping them to be more resilient in the face of study pressure and common psychological problems.

Increase the organization of extracurricular activities on health care and life skills such as: First aid skills; sex education; accident and injury prevention... These activities will equip students with self-protection skills, creating a safe and friendly environment.

Finally, it is necessary to equip students with skills to use social networks safely and healthily. Social networks are a "double-edged sword" that can help people exploit them properly to develop their intelligence; however, they will also become a social evil if they exploit them for the wrong purposes. Therefore, equipping students with skills to identify false information and use the internet properly is extremely necessary.

In my opinion, if implemented synchronously and flexibly, the above solutions will practically contribute to helping students overcome challenges and develop comprehensively in terms of intelligence, personality and skills in the 4.0 era.

Reporter: To spread the Young Pioneer movement widely, can you share good models and meaningful initiatives that you have effectively implemented to attract a large number of students to participate and equip them with necessary life skills?

Teacher Hoang Thi Thu Mai: During my work, the school and I have implemented many interesting models and initiatives to attract students to participate in Team activities, while at the same time, training them in practical life skills. Some typical models include: Model: "I make a small plan"; "I take care of the vegetable garden"; "Traffic safety school gate"; model "Leadership club of change"; Initiative "Measures to educate discipline and order for students to prevent and combat school violence"; Initiative "Guiding students in practicing Team etiquette skills" has been effective at Nong Ha Secondary School... Organizing activities to support students in difficult circumstances in the Team, people with disabilities in the area, people affected by natural disasters... contributing to training students in a sense of responsibility, compassion, and a sense of sharing in life.

The school and I focus on integrating experiential activities into the Youth Union program. Creating an environment for students to practice practical skills. Experiential activities are linked to monthly themes and major holidays of the year.

Reporter: On the occasion of the 84th anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers Team (May 15, 1941 - May 15, 2025), what message do you want to send to the team members - the future owners of the country?

Teacher Hoang Thi Thu Mai: The red scarves on the children's shoulders are not only a beautiful symbol of the tradition of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers, but also remind each member of their will, responsibility and gratitude. President Ho Chi Minh once advised: "Young people do small things, according to their strength" - this simple but profound teaching still holds true today.

I believe that, with will, pride and constant efforts, you will study well, practice hard, nurture beautiful dreams, so that in the future you can contribute to building a strong and developed Vietnam, standing shoulder to shoulder with the world powers as Uncle Ho wished.
