As summer vacation approaches, while most parents continue their daily work, many young children lack regular supervision and care. Research shows that in recent years, localities throughout the province have intensified efforts to promote and organize summer activities for children during the summer. However, for preschool children, participation in community activities remains limited due to their young age and heavy reliance on family care.
Ms. Hoang Mai Huong, from Khon Pit Hamlet, Tam Thanh Ward, said: "My child is attending Hoa Huong Duong Kindergarten. During the summer break, while both my husband and I still have to work, arranging childcare has become a significant problem for our family. In the early days of summer, we had to ask grandparents from the countryside to come and help. However, this is only a temporary solution because the grandparents are elderly, and supervising young children all day is quite difficult. Leaving the child at home watching phones too much could affect their health, while letting them play outside in the residential area raises safety concerns. Therefore, our family is looking into suitable summer activity classes so that the child can have a fun environment, interact with friends, and have someone to supervise them while we are at work."
Not only in urban areas, but also in many communes throughout the province, caring for children during the summer is a concern for many parents. Mr. Hoang Van Huan, from Dau Linh village, That Khe commune, said: "My daughter is 5 years old this year and just finished her school year at the local kindergarten. Because my wife and I often work far from home, her care is mainly handled by her grandparents. What worries us most is that when the grandparents are busy, she goes out to play with her friends without the adults knowing. Therefore, the family always tries to maintain contact, monitor, and remind her regularly during the summer."
Responding to the practical needs of parents, some preschools in the province continue to provide childcare services during the summer. At Tuoi Tho Preschool in Tam Thanh ward, since the beginning of June 2026, the school has organized 13 summer classes with over 250 children participating. Ms. Tran Thi Nhan, the school principal, said: In addition to ensuring the care and nurturing of children, the school has developed many age-appropriate activities such as physical exercise, singing and dancing, art, English introductions, simple science exploration, and group games to create a safe environment and help children maintain their routines during the summer break.
The province currently has 231 preschools. However, the number of preschools organizing summer activities is still limited. According to the provincial education department, summer classes are mainly concentrated in 8 private preschools with nearly 1,000 children participating, and a few other facilities that meet the requirements in terms of teaching staff, facilities, and the actual needs of parents. Most public preschools have completed their school year as planned, and teachers are on summer vacation, so they do not organize childcare activities during the summer break.
In light of this situation, before the end of the school year, the Department of Education and Training directed preschools to strengthen coordination with families in managing children; to promote awareness about preventing accidents and injuries, preventing drowning, and other safety risks for children during the summer. Schools proactively guided parents in creating a safe living environment for children at home, and reviewed the conditions for organizing summer activities on a voluntary basis, in accordance with the actual needs and conditions of each unit. This contributed to creating more safe living and playing environments for children during the summer.
The summer vacation lasts nearly three months, while most parents continue with their regular jobs. Under these circumstances, coordination between families, schools, and local communities, along with regular attention and supervision from adults, will help ensure preschool children have a safe environment for play and activities during the summer months.
