Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien particularly appreciated the potential and strengths of renewable energy (wind power, solar power) of Lam Dong province.

In mid-September 2025, at a working session with the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and the People's Committee of Lam Dong province, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien shared such information, highlighting the potentials and strengths of Lam Dong province in socio -economic development. According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Lam Dong province, in the adjusted Power Plan VIII, Lam Dong proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade add a total capacity of 20,530 MW to the adjusted Power Plan VIII. However, according to the guiding criteria of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, especially the criteria for the ability to connect to release capacity and overlap minerals, the approved plan is 6,598 MW. The mobilization into Lam Dong's plan has only reached 32%. Thus, the potential for energy development in the province is still very large.
On the basis of the approved planning, Lam Dong has developed a plan to implement the VIII Power Plan with specific contents, tasks, and progress for implementation, and at the same time reviewed and evaluated the suitability of projects listed in the VIII Power Plan with other plans, as well as considered security and defense factors, the current status of land plots and land areas... to redefine boundaries and locations, especially updating connection plans according to transformer stations and power grids in the adjusted VIII Power Plan. Lam Dong province has also accelerated the progress of updating the VIII Power Plan into provincial planning, construction planning, land use planning at all levels, in addition to developing plans to develop the power supply network in the provincial planning, organizing the selection of investors to implement power projects, creating favorable conditions for project implementation... to exploit and use renewable energy sources, new energy, clean energy to serve the socio-economic development of the locality. However, in the process of implementing renewable energy development, Lam Dong has encountered some difficulties that need to be resolved, such as: basic investigation of renewable energy and new energy has not been carried out (lack of information, database of wind resources, solar radiation...) leading to difficulties in preparing feasibility study reports/investment proposal documents for projects, documents related to bidding; there are no regulations on authority, order and procedures for surveying, measuring radiation, installing wind measuring columns, installing wind measuring columns onshore as a basis for implementing offshore wind power projects, measuring wind at sea, setting standards for using water surface area (including sea surface), land for 1MW of wind power, solar power; basic investigation of renewable energy resources in marine areas is under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , while the responsibility for ensuring energy security is under the authority of the Ministry of Industry and Trade...
According to energy experts, the ability to supply electricity in the coming time will depend largely on the development of baseload power sources (coal-fired thermal power, LNG power), renewable energy sources, storage batteries, etc. In which, renewable energy is an inevitable trend. The energy conversion towards gradually reducing the proportion of fossil fuels in electricity production to renewable energy and new energy is not only a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also opens up opportunities for green economic growth. With abundant clean energy resources, especially offshore wind power and solar power, Lam Dong has favorable conditions to attract investment projects in the renewable energy sector. Many large enterprises in the energy sector have come to Lam Dong to survey and implement projects, opening up expectations for a clean industry, linking economic growth with environmental protection. Developing renewable energy also helps localities diversify their electricity supply sources, promote bauxite mining industry, deep processing of agricultural products, ancillary services, create more jobs, contribute to shifting the economic structure towards green, sustainable growth, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
