Proposal to upgrade Quang Tri Airport from 4C to 4E.

The People's Committee of Quang Tri province has recently issued a document regarding the adjustment and upgrading of Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E.

Accordingly, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province requested the Ministry of Construction to consider and study the upgrading of Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E during the process of adjusting the overall plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, and submit it to the competent authority for consideration and approval.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations, a Category 4E airport is an airport capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A350, and other specialized aircraft.

These airports typically have long runways and facilities that meet the standards for serving international and intercontinental flights.

According to Mr. Le Duc Tien, Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, Quang Tri Airport plays an important role, as identified in the National Master Plan for the Development of the Airport System for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, with the scale of a 4C-level civil airport and a level II military airport.

The port has a capacity of 1 million passengers per year and 3,100 tons of cargo per year; it handles aircraft of code C or equivalent; and has a land area of 316.57 hectares.

Currently, Quang Tri Airport Company Limited (the project enterprise) is implementing the construction of the project's components; according to the schedule, phase 1 will be completed and put into operation by the end of 2026.

During the project implementation, in order to ensure long-term operation and alignment with development orientation, the project enterprise proposed adjusting and upgrading the scale of Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E.

In addition, the runway project (currently under construction and expected to be completed in 2026) has also been proposed by Quang Tri Airport Company Limited, with structural calculations aimed at accommodating Code C aircraft, and subsequently Code E aircraft.

The proposal was appraised by the Department of Economic and Investment Management of Construction, Ministry of Construction, regarding the construction design to be implemented after the basic design, and the results were announced in Document No. 828/CKTQLXD-QLXD3 dated April 28, 2025.
