The former Real Madrid star has announced he will leave Benfica after the 2024/25 season concludes. In an emotional social media post, the Argentinian star hinted that the match against Braga in the Portuguese league could be his last appearance for Benfica.
"It's been a long year filled with hard work and effort. It's heartbreaking not to have achieved my goals, but I'm proud to wear this jersey again," the 37-year-old star posted along with a photo of himself waving to fans.
Di Maria returned to Benfica in the summer of 2023 after his contract with Juventus expired. Last season, his form was inconsistent, partly due to injuries that kept him out of many matches. Nevertheless, Di Maria still showed his value, finishing the season with 8 goals and 5 assists in 25 Primeira Liga games.
Di Maria boasts an impressive record with La Liga and Champions League titles with Real Madrid, five Ligue 1 titles with PSG, a Portuguese league title, an Olympic gold medal, and the pinnacle achievement of winning the 2022 World Cup with the Argentine national team.
According to Bein Sports , Di Maria has not retired. There is a possibility he could reunite with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami this summer.
