Buying a new house or a new car near Tet (Lunar New Year) is a way to mark the culmination of an intention cherished throughout the year. Buying a new house to celebrate Tet, buying a new car to drive during Tet. It sounds funny because it seems illogical, but it's also very endearing.
Because these are two expensive items, when buying a house or a car, besides appearance and functionality, everyone is concerned about feng shui. When buying a house, they consider the direction; when buying a car, they choose the color. But if the house doesn't have a suitable direction, they'll buy another one. And if there aren't any suitable colors for the car, people often choose... black! Simply because black might not match their birth element, but it looks more luxurious and is easier to sell. So, in the end, the compatibility factor is less important than the luxury and good resale value.
Everyone is busy during Tet (Lunar New Year), but homebuyers and carbuyers tend to think that sellers want to get their money back before Tet. As a result, customers will make things difficult and create more unreasonable demands than usual to get the seller to comply.
It's like "going shopping" around, finding a place you like, and then starting to haggle. Even though you want a new house, a new car, and Tet (Lunar New Year) is just around the corner, you're the one with money, so you have to haggle enthusiastically first. But customers don't know that the commission for sellers is the same whether it's Tet or any other day; they only get a certain amount for their "cut" and can't get any more. So haggling is just for the feeling of having money, and you rarely actually get a discount.
Once the price is agreed upon, the contract begins. Buying a house is a done deal, but buying a car isn't. The customer will demand the seller pay taxes, register the vehicle, see if they can get a nice license plate at a low cost, and get it inspected. The customer only pays for the mandatory fees; the seller's effort is considered free! To please the customer, the car salesperson will queue up to pay taxes, then rush to register the vehicle, and then frantically go for the inspection. Normally, this process takes a whole day, but during Tet (Vietnamese New Year), traffic jams make it impossible to speed things up. The customer then complains, criticizes, and blames them.
During Tet (Vietnamese New Year), customers who buy houses can do whatever they want after the holiday. But it's different for car buyers! The car needs to be ready for Tet holiday trips, right? That's where the story begins: installing accessories, tinting windows. And that's what the car salesperson has to do again. Prices will continue to be compared and negotiated. However, at this stage, there's no "cutting corners," and the salesperson gets a little extra money.
With Tet approaching, having bought a new house and finished getting a new car, I'm happily sitting in my new car, admiring the city streets through the tinted windows. What could be more delightful?
But by then, the vendors started worrying about their own Tet (Lunar New Year), they started shopping. But they couldn't haggle like their customers anymore! Tet was coming, if they didn't buy quickly, who would sell to them? So they bought hastily, buying gold.
And then on the first day of the year, they'll go out, they'll cruise around the main streets. And if they see a customer in the new car they just sold, they'll proudly tell their family that it was their last car of the year, with a satisfied smile.
During Tet (Vietnamese New Year), everyone wants to create their own fun.
