The Co Nhac Tu relic site – a place of worship for the founders of Hue's traditional music – located at alley 127 Nguyen Trai Street, Phu Xuan Ward, Hue City, is a structure of exceptional historical and cultural value, and was classified as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic in early 2010.

Co Nhac Tu is an ancestral temple dedicated to the founding masters, artists, musicians, and deceased singers of Hue's traditional music, an art form with a long history and an important place in the national cultural heritage.

However, this monument is currently in a state of severe disrepair, with many wooden structures, roof tiles, and fences sinking and cracking. In particular, the foundation of the main church, with its traditional three-bay architecture, shows signs of tilting, sinking, and chipping; the walls are cracked vertically, the plaster is peeling off, moss is growing thickly, and many decorative details are severely damaged.

The foundation is sinking and cracking, infested with termites and vegetation, causing the wooden roof structure to sag and deform noticeably. The wooden structure is severely damaged by termites, with many components rotting, cracking, and posing a safety risk. The traditional tiled roof is displaced and broken, causing persistent leaks.

Poet Vo Que, head of the Hue Chamber Music Club, said that recently, on the 16th day of the third lunar month, the Hue Traditional Music Association was unable to hold the annual commemoration ceremony for the founders of the profession here on the same scale as in previous years because the historical site was in such a state of disrepair.

According to Mr. Que, many artists and actors visiting the site to offer incense to the patron saint of their profession have to wear helmets because they feel unsafe as the pillars, beams, and yin-yang roof tiles at this historical site could collapse at any moment.

This is an important historical site for Hue, so Mr. Que hopes that the relevant authorities will soon come up with a restoration plan.

It is known that since being recognized as a cultural heritage site, Co Nhac Tu has not been restored or renovated. In 2023, in the report "Results of the Project on Protecting and Promoting the Value of Hue Traditional Music Heritage giai đoạn 2017 - 2022", the Department of Culture and Sports proposed that the Hue City People's Committee invest funds in restoration to create a traditional gathering place for artisans, artists, and musicians working in Hue's traditional music industry. However, to date, this project has not been implemented, while the site is deteriorating severely.

Recently, representatives from Phu Xuan ward visited and surveyed the site to propose an emergency protection plan. Accordingly, Phu Xuan ward will soon submit a request to the Hue City Department of Culture and Sports to review, inspect, and confirm the condition of the Co Nhac Tu Church relic. This will provide a basis for establishing, evaluating, and approving a plan for the preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of the Co Nhac Tu Church relic in accordance with the prescribed authority and procedures. The estimated cost for restoration and preservation is approximately 3.6 billion VND.

The Co Nhac Tu (Ancient Music Temple) was built in 1966 on the site of the Tan Mieu (New Temple) established by King Thanh Thai in 1891 to worship King Duc Duc. After historical upheavals, in 1966, Empress Dowager Tu Cung allowed the Imperial Music Ensemble to use the site and build the temple. The structure covers an area of over 240 square meters and includes a gate, surrounding walls, a front hall, and an inner sanctuary, all reflecting traditional architecture.

On the 16th day of the 3rd lunar month and the 16th day of the 10th lunar month each year, at Co Nhac Tu, traditional Hue music artisans and artists hold a ceremony to worship the patron saint of their profession.
