Fjord, a film about a Romanian family of five who immigrated to Norway and became the subject of investigation, separated, and monitored by the local justice system, won the prestigious Palme d'Or this year. The film's script is based on a true story of a Romanian family and stars Hollywood actor Sebastian Stan. The awards ceremony took place on the evening of May 23rd in Cannes, France.

This is director Mungiu's second Palme d'Or since his film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which earned him the top prize at Cannes in 2007.

The Grand Prize went to exiled Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, who currently lives in France. Minotaur is his first film in nine years.

This year, European filmmakers dominated at Cannes. The "Best Director" award was shared equally between Spanish director Javier Calva and Polish director Javier Ambrossi for the film The Black Ball , and Pawel Pawlikowski for the film Fatherland.

The Best Actress award went to French actress Virginie Efira and Japanese actor Tao Okamoto, born in 1985. She is one of the few Asian artists to be nominated this year. Meanwhile, two young Belgian actors, Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia, shared the Best Actor award for their roles in the film Coward.
