Every Lunar New Year, when the clear and elegant piano melodies of "Happy New Year" resound, millions of Vietnamese people feel a sense of calm, even amidst the vibrant atmosphere of spring. Why can a song about a somber "morning after" ignite hope in a world yearning for peace?

In the vast treasury of world popular music , few works contain as many layers of profound meaning and intriguing paradoxes as "Happy New Year."

Born in 1980, at the twilight of the Disco era, the song is not a cheerful tune or a lively spring song. It's a melancholic ballad, reflecting the emptiness and existential loneliness of humanity at the end of the party. But from the ashes of those emotions, a global spring symphony has emerged, especially in Vietnam – where the song has become an integral part of Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year).

Written in 1980, a year when the Cold War was raging and inflation weighed heavily on the Western world, but for ABBA, it was also a time when their happiness began to "crash." Björn and Agnetha divorced in 1979. Benny and Frida were also nearing the end of their marriage.

The atmosphere in Polar Studios in Stockholm at that time no longer had the exhilaration of the Dancing Queen era, but instead a cold professionalism mixed with suppressed emotions. The album Super Trouper, which includes Happy New Year , is therefore much more introspective.

Few people know that this song actually originated from a tragicomic idea. In January 1980, in Barbados, Benny and Björn sketched out a song titled "Daddy Don't Get Drunk on Christmas Day." It was intended to be a country-influenced song, satirizing family tragedies during the holiday season. But with their innate talent, they realized the theme was too specific and melancholic, not befitting the style the group was aiming for.

The decision to change the lyrics while retaining the melody was a historical turning point. Björn Ulvaeus elevated the song from a small family drama into a philosophical narrative about time. He chose the "morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year"—the most sensitive transitional moment—as the setting, transforming the song into a panoramic portrayal of humanity on the threshold of time.

In particular, the lyric "In the end of eighty-nine" inadvertently became a prophecy. Written in 1980, Björn was simply looking towards the end of the decade. But 1989 was also the year the Berlin Wall fell and the world order completely changed. As for ABBA, they had already disbanded before that time.

Over 40 years have passed, ABBA has disbanded and reunited, the 20th century has passed, but "Happy New Year" remains. From the bustling motorbike streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the apartment buildings of Moscow, that melody still resonates as a universal reminder to humanity: " May we all have a vision now and then / Of a world where every neighbor is a friend ."

In a turbulent world, that message is a moral admonition, a fragile yet resilient hope. It suggests that even though we may be foolish ( Man is a fool ), we must have the will to try, and on New Year's Eve this year, or any year for that matter, let our hearts soften a little, and then, step into the "Spring Symphony" with renewed faith.
