Age and frequency of cervical cancer screening

According to Dr. Tran Thi Thu Hong, Head of the Reproductive Health Department at the Can Tho CDC, cervical cancer is currently the second most common type of cancer among women of reproductive age in Vietnam. According to the latest statistics, it is estimated that in 2022, Vietnam had 4,612 women diagnosed with cervical cancer, of which 2,571 died.

Cervical cancer is primarily caused by HPV infection, and the disease often progresses silently over many years, with almost no obvious symptoms in the early stages.

According to professional recommendations, women should begin screening at age 21 or after becoming sexually active. For women aged 21-29, cervical cytology (PCOS) should be performed every three years to detect abnormalities early. Women aged 30-65 can combine both PCOS and HPV testing to improve early detection. If the HPV test or a combination of both methods yields normal results, the interval can be extended to about five years. However, this frequency is not fixed and depends on previous test results, age, and individual risk factors.

Women still need regular screenings even after receiving the HPV vaccine. This is because the HPV vaccine only protects against most high-risk virus types and cannot provide complete protection against all HPV strains. Therefore, vaccination and screening should be considered complementary measures to enhance overall health protection for women.

Additionally, if you experience symptoms such as irregular vaginal bleeding, persistent vaginal discharge with an unusual odor, or pain during intercourse, you should see a doctor immediately.
