On the golden rice fields of Tam Coc, stretching along the Ngo Dong River in the Tam Coc - Bich Dong tourist area (Hoa Lu city), this year, the locals have created a rice field mural titled "Fish Leaping Over the Dragon Gate" covering an area of 10,000 square meters, aiming to convey beautiful aspirations and a spirit of striving for brilliant achievements.
The rice fields in Tam Coc are renowned as one of the five most beautiful rice fields in Vietnam, covering an area of over 18 hectares and winding along the Ngo Dong River. To prepare for the Ninh Binh Tourism Week 2025, which will take place at the end of May, the Tam Coc - Bich Dong Tourism Area Management Board, in coordination with local authorities, has been urging and guiding local farmers to plant rice in time for the planting season since the Lunar New Year.
In particular, this year's "Fish Leaping Over the Dragon Gate" painting features many complex details and interwoven colors, requiring precise rice planting instructions, and timely thinning, care, and adjustments during the rice's growth process. The Thai Xuyen rice variety, known for its sturdy stems and good pest and disease resistance, is well-suited to the local soil conditions and continues to be cultivated to realize the artistic vision of the painting. Farmers also receive full support with rice seeds, fertilizers, and guidance on cultivation, pest control, and ensuring the rice ripens beautifully.
Ms. Hoang Thi Hue (Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu city) said that local people are proud to have contributed to creating the painting on the Tam Coc - Bich Dong rice fields. The painting not only holds great significance but also conveys the people's wish to promote the beautiful image of their homeland to a wide range of domestic and international tourists.
According to artist Nguyen Phuc Khoi, the imagery in the Tam Coc rice fields is a very special source of artistic inspiration. This year's theme for the rice fields is the painting "Fish Leaping Over the Dragon Gate." This is a popular theme in feng shui art, symbolizing success and progress in life, which is very fitting for Ninh Binh's recent successes. The painting "Fish Leaping Over the Dragon Gate" is considered a symbol of perseverance, creativity, and the effort to overcome difficulties and challenges in life.
Furthermore, carp are also considered a symbol of longevity and good fortune. With that in mind, artist Phuc Khoi always aims to innovate artistic depictions of rice fields while still ensuring folk elements that are close to the characteristics of rice- farming communities in the Northern region in general and Ninh Binh in particular.
Ms. Bui Thi Nhai, in charge of environmental landscape at Tam Coc - Bich Dong Tourist Area, said that the rice plants are currently in a vigorous growth stage, tillering and preparing to reach the heading stage. Farmers are replanting and will apply fertilizer to create the best conditions for the plants to develop, tiller, and create a uniform field, resulting in a complete, vibrant, and visually stunning landscape.
Aiming to successfully develop "Tam Coc in all four seasons" to create new products and diverse experiences for domestic and international tourists, in the future, Tam Coc - Bich Dong Tourist Area hopes that the artistic creation on the rice fields will not only be at the entrance of Hai Cave but also across the entire field, becoming the largest artistic rice field in Vietnam to honor the Vietnamese rice farming tradition.
The new look of the Tam Coc art field in 2025 will significantly contribute to stimulating tourism, promoting cultural beauty, increasing visitor numbers, and affirming the Ninh Binh tourism brand - a leading destination attracting domestic and international tourists.
