When the sea and sky are calm, people respectfully turn their thoughts to their ancestors, deities, and especially the Whale God – the guardian deity who has been closely associated with the lives of fishermen for generations. Amidst the solemn incense smoke and the lively drumming of the festival, people express their hopes for a year of favorable weather, calm seas, successful voyages at sea, and a prosperous and peaceful life.
The 2026 Fishing Festival in Son Tra Ward will take place at the Van Dong Hiep Ancestral Temple from April 3rd to 5th (corresponding to the 16th to 18th of the 2nd lunar month) with many solemn traditional rituals such as welcoming the deities, offering sacrifices to the spirits, and the main fishing prayer ceremony… reflecting the strong beliefs of the coastal inhabitants.
In addition, the festival features a vibrant atmosphere with Bài Chòi folk singing, Tuồng opera, Bả Trạo chanting, beach volleyball, and many other unique community activities, recreating the characteristic fishing village culture of the Central Vietnam coastal region.
Beyond its spiritual significance for coastal residents, the Son Tra Fishing Festival is also an opportunity to preserve the traditional cultural values of the fishing village, foster community spirit, and spread the image of a vibrant, friendly, and distinctive coastal region to visitors from near and far.
