At the airport to welcome the delegation, on the Myanmar side were Mr. U Soe Thein, Chief Minister of Yangon Region, and on the Vietnamese side were the Vietnamese Ambassador to Myanmar, Ly Quoc Tuan, Colonel Dao Van Duy, Defense Attaché, and all staff members of the Vietnamese Embassy in Myanmar.
To help Myanmar overcome the aftermath of the earthquake, Vietnam decided to provide emergency relief supplies as requested by Myanmar, donating US$300,000 to help Myanmar recover from the earthquake.
Vietnamese rescue teams will begin deploying rescue and relief efforts in earthquake-affected areas starting tomorrow. Relief supplies will also be delivered to people in the affected regions.
"We will coordinate with the United Nations, international coordinating forces, and the Myanmar Rescue Committee, and based on our forces, equipment, and expertise, we will determine the area for carrying out the mission to ensure maximum effectiveness," said Major General Pham Van Ty.
According to Major General Pham Van Ty, the Vietnam People's Army has selected its most elite forces to provide earthquake relief in Myanmar, bringing with them equipment, including heavy machinery. Their top priority is to quickly search for and rescue victims still trapped in the rubble in earthquake-ravaged areas.
Colonel Nguyen Minh Khuong, Deputy Director of Department C07, affirmed that the members of the team will uphold the spirit of self-discipline, organizational discipline, solidarity, and proactively overcome all difficulties to successfully complete the assigned tasks; while ensuring absolute safety throughout the search and rescue operation.
These efforts by the Party, State, and people of Vietnam to support Myanmar, an ASEAN member, in overcoming and mitigating the consequences of natural disasters demonstrate Vietnam's tradition of "loving others as oneself," its international responsibility, and its humanitarian spirit. They also affirm the prestige and capabilities of Vietnamese rescue and relief forces in participating in international activities.
On March 28, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son and the Vietnam-Myanmar Friendship Association also sent a message of condolences to the people of Myanmar.
