On March 25th in Washington D.C., Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Secretary of State Antony Blinken co-chaired the Vietnam-US Foreign Ministers' Dialogue.
This is the first ministerial-level dialogue between Vietnam and the United States since the two countries established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this was an important occasion for both sides to review and promote the implementation of the high-level agreement between the two countries.
The United States values its comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam and supports a strong, independent, self-reliant, and prosperous Vietnam that continues to innovate and expand its international integration. The Secretary of State emphasized the U.S. commitment to implementing the new relationship framework and agreements reached by the two countries' high-level leaders.
Minister Bui Thanh Son agreed with Foreign Minister Antony Blinken on the significance of the annual ministerial-level dialogue mechanism between the two countries.
The Minister affirmed that the United States is a strategically important partner of Vietnam, and upgrading bilateral relations is a correct decision reflecting the strategic vision of the high-level leaders of both countries and the efforts to strengthen cooperation.
Vietnam will continue to work with the United States to implement an effective, substantive, and stable comprehensive strategic partnership, expanding the scope of cooperation to maintain the momentum of development for decades to come.
Both sides agreed to promote the dialogue mechanism to strengthen close cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs. They agreed to effectively implement existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including dialogue on political , security, and defense issues, defense policy dialogue, and human rights dialogue; and to actively coordinate the organization of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of relations between the two countries in 2025.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern. Minister Bui Thanh Son requested that the United States continue to play an active role in contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, as well as globally.
Secretary of State Blinken emphasized that the United States supports ASEAN's central role in the region and will continue to promote cooperation within the framework of the ASEAN-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; it also supports Mekong-US cooperation, climate change response, and UN peacekeeping operations.
The two sides exchanged views on the South China Sea issue and agreed on the importance of peace, security, stability, and freedom of navigation and overflight.
On the morning of March 25, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son met with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
During the meeting, Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed his pleasure at the proactive and positive progress made by both sides in implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam considers the United States a strategically important partner and highly appreciates the US's support for a strong, independent, self-reliant, and prosperous Vietnam.
The Minister suggested that both sides continue to strengthen cooperation across all pillars of the comprehensive strategic partnership, prioritizing the preparation for exchanges and contacts between the two countries, especially at the high level. The two countries should maintain existing dialogue mechanisms and explore opening new ones, including on issues where differences still exist.
Continuing to expand cooperation in economic and trade relations, science and technology, especially in innovation and training high-quality human resources, the Minister requested that the US soon recognize Vietnam's market economy status...
We urge the US to remove Vietnam from the list of countries restricted from exporting high-tech products as soon as possible.
Recognizing Vietnam as a market economy would be a testament to Vietnam-US trust.
