Passion fruit is one of the main crops of Khun Ha commune.

Visiting San Phang Cao village on a day at the end of September, we saw people busy harvesting fresh tea buds on the hillsides. Through conversation, we learned that for many years, tea has been identified by the commune as a key crop to expand the area every year. The suitable climate and soil help tea grow well, with high productivity, bringing stable income to hundreds of households.
Mr. Cu A Chinh in San Phang Cao village shared: “When the commune mobilized and the State supported seedlings and farming techniques, my family boldly converted the hilly land area of ineffective crops to tea cultivation. With more than 5,000 square meters of tea, each crop yields 500-700 kg of fresh tea buds. I also applied science and technology and invested in agricultural tools to support production, thereby reducing labor costs and increasing income.”
The whole commune currently has more than 436 hectares of tea, concentrated in the villages of Then Thau, San Phang Cao... Tea trees are gradually asserting their position in the local sustainable agricultural development strategy, helping many households escape poverty.
Not only that, people also develop a comprehensive economic model, combining cultivation with livestock raising to have a sustainable source of income. The family of Mr. Cu A Long in San Phang Cao village is a typical example. Although he is over 60 years old, he is still active and bold in bringing valuable plants and animals into production. Currently, his family has more than 1 hectare of tea, over 20 beekeeping boxes for honey, over 40 rabbits, and commercial fish farming. After deducting expenses, each year the economic model brings in a profit of more than 80 million VND.
Mr. Long excitedly said: Farming is hard work, but if you are diligent and produce a variety of crops and livestock, you will have a high income. Now, with the support of machinery, production knowledge can be accumulated from many channels: participating in vocational training classes; through local models; on mass media... production is also more convenient and effective.
Along with cultivation, Khun Ha commune focuses on developing livestock and aquaculture. The area of grasslands and grazing grounds is large, the commune encourages households to build solid barns, focusing on selecting breeds and preventing diseases. The total livestock herd of the commune is more than 4,100; poultry is 18,400 and aquaculture is nearly 30 hectares.
The advantage of climate and terrain is also a strength for the commune to encourage and expand the area of medicinal plant cultivation with more than 440 hectares of cardamom, nearly 30 hectares of Lai Chau ginseng and some other types.
Mr. Pham Van Hieu - Head of Khun Ha Commune Economic Department said: Favored by nature in terms of climate and soil, the commune propagates and mobilizes people to take advantage of the local potential and strengths to diversify crops such as rice, corn, tea, temperate fruit trees, passion fruit, etc. Along with that, it directs and guides the care and protection of medicinal plant areas, especially expanding the area of suitable plants. Every year, the commune organizes delegations to visit and learn from new models and good practices in localities to summarize and apply to local and family production. Coordinate with specialized agencies of the province to transfer science and technology, provide vocational training in animal husbandry and cultivation, and create a basic knowledge base for farmers.
Economic development creates the premise for the commune to implement criteria that require the community's cooperation in building new rural areas such as: culture, housing, transportation, etc. New rural areas - New appearance from clean and beautiful roads, spacious houses, under the fields, on the hills covered with green rice, corn, tea, passion fruit, the bright smiles of the people when the harvest season comes show the appearance, vitality, development, and change that have appeared in the highlands of Khun Ha.
