A wave of violence rocked Gaza as negotiations to achieve a ceasefire and the release of hostages resumed in Qatar. Israel confirmed on January 4th that talks were taking place in Qatar, and yesterday the Israeli newspaper Hayom reported that a government plane had returned from Qatar following the negotiations.
Many civilians were killed when Israel attacked Hamas targets across Gaza.
The outcome of the negotiations remains unclear, but after the plane returned, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urgently convened a security dialogue on the afternoon of January 5th, attended by Israeli Defense Minister Katz, National Security Minister Ben-Gvir, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, according to Israeli military radio. Earlier, Minister Katz confirmed that Prime Minister Netanyahu had given detailed instructions regarding the agenda for the talks, following the release of a video by the Hamas armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, showing an Israeli hostage being held in Gaza.

Also yesterday, the Israeli military said it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen. According to official information, the missile was shot down before it could penetrate deep into Israeli territory, AFP reported.
On the same day, the Houthi-run Saba news website and Al-Masirah television reported on three attacks that occurred east of Saada in northern Yemen, which they claimed were carried out by the US and UK. Washington and London have not commented on the report.
