A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook many buildings in New York City and surrounding states, an area rarely experiencing strong geological activity.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 10:20 a.m. on April 5 (9:20 p.m. Hanoi time) with its epicenter at a depth of nearly 5 kilometers, north of Whitehouse Station in New Jersey.

The tremors were clearly felt in New York City and New Jersey, as well as northern Pennsylvania and western Connecticut. Many buildings shook, catching local residents by surprise, as this area rarely experiences significant geological activity.
There is no information yet regarding casualties or damage from the earthquake.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that flights from New York City could be delayed by at least 30-45 minutes. Civil aviation tracking data also showed that some flights to New York City had been diverted.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said they are deploying an emergency response. The White House said that U.S. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the matter.
"Everything shook violently for about 30 seconds, like sitting on the lap of a drum," said Charita Walcott, a 38-year-old resident of the Bronx in New York City.

The United Nations Security Council had to suspend its meeting on the situation in the Gaza Strip due to the earthquake.
The incident reminded some New York residents of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Virginia in 2011, which prompted evacuation orders for many buildings in the city. The tremors were felt in more than 10 states, causing an estimated $300 million in damage.
