The German Geological Survey (GFZ) reported the earthquake as measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, while the Philippine seismological agency assessed it as 5.9.

The earthquake has disrupted search and rescue operations for dozens of people missing in a landslide caused by prolonged heavy rain in the town of Maco, in the southern province of Davao de Oro. The landslide occurred on the evening of February 6 outside a gold mine. To date, the death toll stands at 28, with 77 missing and 32 injured.

In recent weeks, continuous heavy rains have poured down on many areas of Mindanao Island, including Davao de Oro province in the Philippines, causing severe flooding and landslides, forcing tens of thousands of people to seek shelter in evacuation camps.
