The earthquake injured 27 people and damaged several buildings in southern Peru. No fatalities were reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake's epicenter was located 20 kilometers southeast of the town of Pampa de Tate, in the Ica region of Ica province, Peru. The earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of 56.5 kilometers.
Peruvian Defense Minister Amadeo Flores visited the earthquake-damaged area and inspected several damaged buildings, including the University of San Luis Gonzaga.
Earthquakes are frequent in Peru because the country lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean basin.

Meanwhile, eastern Türkiye also experienced a 5.6 magnitude earthquake on May 20th. Local emergency services reported that the earthquake occurred in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province at 9:00 AM (local time). According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, the earthquake had a depth of 7 kilometers.
There were no immediate reports of damage from the earthquake, but television images showed schools being evacuated and people rushing out of their homes.
Türkiye lies on major fault lines and earthquakes occur frequently.
In 2023, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Türkiye killed more than 53,000 people and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. In this earthquake disaster, an additional 6,000 people died in the northern region of neighboring Syria.
