The Ha Hoa Regional Medical Center (Phu Tho province) recently received and successfully treated a case of a young child with a foreign object – an iron screw – lodged in their nose.
According to family members, the child is suspected of having inserted a foreign object into their nose while playing at home. Upon admission to the hospital, the child exhibited fussiness, discomfort in the nasal area, and discharge from one nostril. After examination, doctors identified a metallic foreign object in the nasal cavity and quickly and safely removed it.
Doctors warn that if metal foreign objects remain in the nose for a long time, they can damage the mucous membrane, cause bleeding, infection, pain, and, more dangerously, fall deeper into the airway, causing difficulty breathing and threatening life.
Experts advise parents not to let children play with small objects such as screws, button batteries, coins, magnets, or other toy parts that are easy to swallow. Adults should regularly check play areas and supervise children, especially during summer vacation.
When children show signs of coughing, difficulty breathing, unusual nasal discharge, vomiting, or if there is suspicion of swallowing or ingesting a foreign object, parents should take them to a medical facility immediately. Under no circumstances should parents attempt to remove the foreign object at home to avoid causing it to move deeper into the body.
