Dong Thap province is "betting" on ecotourism, logistics, and the green economy.

VHO - Dong Thap province has just announced adjustments to its planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, aiming to become a modern economic center and a "livable place" in the Mekong Delta region. Ecotourism, logistics, high-tech agriculture, and the green economy are identified as new growth drivers.

According to the new plan, the province aims to develop Dong Thap into a center for ecotourism, green economy , and modern industry in the Mekong Delta, with the people at the center of development. Tourism spaces will be linked to the river and wetland ecosystems of Dong Thap Muoi, the coastal areas, and economic corridors along the Tien and Hau rivers.

Notably, the province will establish five key socio-economic zones. Among them, the Dong Thap Muoi region will continue to play the role of an "ecological lung," developing ecotourism linked to wetland conservation and climate change adaptation. The coastal region is planned for the development of marine tourism, marine economy, wind power, and aquaculture. Economic corridors along the Tien and Hau rivers are expected to become inter-regional tourism, logistics, and trade hubs.

Beyond just economic growth, the new plan also emphasizes the goal of building Dong Thap into a "livable" locality with a synchronized infrastructure system, high-quality social services, and a sustainable ecological environment.

For the period 2026-2030, Dong Thap aims for a GRDP growth rate of 9.5-10% per year; GRDP per capita reaching approximately 155 million VND; exports reaching 14.8 billion USD; attracting 750,000-800,000 billion VND in social investment capital; and establishing approximately 22,500 new businesses.

The province also aims to create jobs for 250,000 workers, complete 12,200 social housing units, eliminate multidimensional poverty, achieve 100% health insurance coverage for the population, and ensure all schools meet national standards by 2030.

In terms of development space, Dong Thap has defined five strategic economic corridors: the expressway corridor - National Highway 1, the eastern coastal corridor, the corridor along the Tien River, the Hau River logistics corridor, and the Dong Thap Muoi connecting corridor. These are considered the "backbone" for expanding regional linkages between the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region.

Another noteworthy point is that after 2030, the province is studying the possibility of relocating the administrative center to the old Cai Be area when conditions and resources are sufficient. The plan also aims for the entire province to have approximately 48 urban areas by 2030, with an urbanization rate of about 50%.

Dong Thap province has identified five strategic breakthroughs: developing transportation and logistics infrastructure; high-tech ecological agriculture; green industry; high-quality human resources; and digital transformation. The province emphasizes the principle of not sacrificing the environment for growth, prioritizing the attraction of high-tech, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly projects.

Notably, tourism has been identified as one of the new growth pillars of Dong Thap after the planning adjustment. Beyond developing traditional ecotourism, the province is aiming for a green tourism model, focusing on resorts and high-tech agricultural experiences linked to the Dong Thap Muoi ecosystem, the Tien River, and the coastal areas after the merger.

The formation of economic corridors along the Tien and Hau rivers, along with a network of inter-regional expressways, is expected to create a major boost for waterway tourism and weekend tourism from Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region. Following its merger with Tien Giang, Dong Thap also expands its development space for beach tourism, garden tourism, and riverine culture, creating a rare advantage in the Mekong Delta by simultaneously possessing wetland ecosystems, islets, gardens, and coastal areas.
