The US dollar is on track for its first weekly gain since mid-March, after China granted some tariff exemptions on US imports, raising hopes that the trade war between the world's two largest economies may be about to ease.
The US dollar has been strongly affected this week by conflicting signals about a thaw in the strained relationship between Washington and Beijing.

On April 25, several businesses were notified of changes indicating that China had granted some exemptions from the 125% tariff on US imports and was asking companies to identify which goods might qualify for these exemptions.
In an interview with Time magazine published on April 25, the Trump administration revealed it was negotiating with China to reach a tariff agreement and that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called him.
The US dollar rose against major currencies in the last trading session and posted modest gains for the week, the first time since mid-March.
However, even with some tax exemptions in place, there is still no clear evidence of changes in the tariff policy, which has caused the dollar to fall 4% since President Trump first announced the tariffs on April 2nd.
The US dollar rose 0.67% against the Japanese yen on the day, reaching 143.555, and gained 0.09% against the Swiss franc, reaching 0.827 francs.
Meanwhile, the euro fell 0.11% to $1.1377, while the pound sterling declined 0.1% to $1.3325, even after UK retail sales unexpectedly surged.
US President Donald Trump rattled the dollar earlier in the week, causing it to plummet against other major currencies, when he threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for delays in cutting interest rates. The greenback rebounded the following day after the US leader denied the threat.
Washington has made some progress in initial trade negotiations with its Asian allies, South Korea and Japan.
Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato said after meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that there were no negotiations on currency.
Japan's chief negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, who is also the Minister of Economy, said that a second round of trade talks with his counterpart Bessent will be held next week.
On April 23, Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda reiterated the BOJ's commitment to raising interest rates if core inflation approaches the projected 2% target. However, he also stressed that policymakers need to carefully consider the consequences of U.S. tariffs.
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at its two-day meeting ending on May 1st.
