Dr. Nguyen The Anh, Head of the Stroke Unit at Thanh Nhan Hospital, said: "About two months before admission, the patient experienced frequent episodes of weakness and tremors in the right hand, making it impossible to hold a pen or dial a phone number, accompanied by difficulty speaking. Each episode lasted about 5 minutes and then subsided on its own. However, the patient neglected to seek medical attention. This time, the symptoms worsened, and the patient finally went to the hospital, unexpectedly receiving a diagnosis of ischemic stroke with bilateral internal carotid artery stenosis."
"Neuroneurological symptoms such as numbness, weakness in the limbs, difficulty speaking, blurred vision… lasting for a few minutes and then disappearing on their own are manifestations of transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), often referred to as the 'night before a stroke'. These signs serve as early warning signs but are often overlooked," emphasized Dr. Nguyen The Anh.
The patient also had a congenital condition of narrowed cerebral blood vessels that she was unaware of. Furthermore, obesity and continuous use of oral contraceptives for a year increased the risk of blood clot formation, leading to cerebral infarction.
Thanks to intensive treatment and rehabilitation, the patient gradually recovered and was able to return to school. Doctors advised the patient to maintain regular follow-up appointments and make lifestyle changes (weight loss) to prevent recurrence.
