Dr. Nguyen The Anh - Head of the Stroke Unit, Thanh Nhan Hospital said: about 2 months before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had many episodes of weakness and tremors in his right hand, unable to hold a pen to write or dial a phone number, and had difficulty speaking. Each episode lasted about 5 minutes, then stopped on its own. However, the patient subjectively did not go to the doctor. This time, the signs became worse, the patient went to the hospital, and was surprised to receive a diagnosis of ischemic stroke, with bilateral internal carotid artery stenosis.
"Neurological symptoms such as numbness, weakness in the limbs, difficulty speaking, blurred vision... lasting for a few minutes and then disappearing on their own are manifestations of transient ischemic attacks or TIAs (transient ischemic attacks), which are likened to 'the night before a stroke'. These signs act as early warning signs but are often overlooked" - Dr. Nguyen The Anh emphasized.
The patient also had a congenital disease of cerebral vascular stenosis but was not aware of it. Furthermore, obesity and continuous use of oral contraceptives for a year were factors that increased the risk of blood clots forming, causing cerebral infarction.
Thanks to intensive treatment and rehabilitation, the patient gradually recovered and was able to return to school. Doctors recommended that the patient maintain regular check-ups and change his lifestyle (lose weight) to prevent recurrence.
