Forecasts indicate fewer storms in the last months of the year.

The meteorological agency has updated its forecast, indicating that the 2026 typhoon season in the East Sea is likely to be less than the multi-year average. However, the possibility of the Southern region being affected by typhoons and tropical depressions in the final months of the year cannot be ruled out.

On the same day, the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting announced that the tropical depression in the Northwest Pacific had strengthened into Typhoon Mekhala. According to forecasts from the Vietnamese meteorological agency and based on several international models, this typhoon is moving northward towards the area near Taiwan (China) and Japan, with no signs of entering the South China Sea yet.

The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting predicts that, due to the influence of El Nino, the South China Sea is likely to experience about 8-10 typhoons and tropical depressions in 2026, lower than the multi-year average. Of these, about 3-5 may affect mainland Vietnam, mainly in July to September in the North and October to November in the Central region.
